Deep dives about Mason

Long reads built from maps, newspapers and public records. All deep dives

How Mason began

Mason grew from a 640-acre tract that Revolutionary War veteran William Mason bought at auction in 1803 on the Cincinnati-Columbus wagon road between the Great and Little Miami Rivers; he platted it in 1815 as 'Palmira,' and the post office renamed it Mason in 1835 because Ohio already had a Palmyra. It stayed a small farm and crossroads village for well over a century, incorporating in 1839-40 with fewer than a few hundred residents and still under 5,700 as late as 1970. The 1972 opening of Kings Island (relocated from flood-prone Coney Island) and the 1979 move of Cincinnati's professional tennis tournament to what became the Lindner Family Tennis Center turned Mason into a regional entertainment and sports destination, and interstate access pulled in corporate offices and subdivisions. Mason became a home-rule city in 1971 and by 2020 had grown to 34,792 residents, one of the fastest-growing cities in the Cincinnati area.

Settled 1803, platted 1815, incorporated 1839 (as a village, effective March 1840); 1971 (as a home-rule city), by William Mason, a Revolutionary War veteran who purchased the 640-acre site at auction on June 1, 1803.

Where the name comes from

William Mason platted 16 lots on his land in 1815 and named the settlement 'Palmira' (also spelled Palmyra). The community was also informally known as Kirkwood for a time, apparently for postmaster William Kirkwood. In 1835, when officials learned another Ohio post office already held the name Palmyra, residents petitioned the federal post office to rename the village 'Mason' in honor of its founder; Van Buren was reportedly considered and rejected as an alternative.

Before the town

No village, camp, or burial site specific to present-day Mason or Mason Township is recorded in the sources checked. The 1882 county history (Beers) states plainly that Warren County as a whole had no permanent Native settlements at the time of white exploration and settlement: 'There is not a town or settlement upon its soil,' and no tribe is known to have lived within the county's limits after the prehistoric Mound-Builders departed. The Miami claimed the broader region of western Ohio as hunting territory without residing there; a decade or so before the Revolutionary War the Miami withdrew north to the Maumee and the Shawnee took up the headwaters of the two Miami Rivers, the tribe most often encountered by early Warren County settlers. Some historians speculated southwestern Ohio was kept open as shared or contested hunting ground between northern and southern tribes rather than settled outright. Warren County's major documented Native American presence is architectural rather than residential: the Hopewell culture's Fort Ancient hilltop earthworks, built roughly 100 BC to AD 400 in Washington Township about seven miles southeast of Lebanon and inscribed in 2023 as part of Ohio's first UNESCO World Heritage Site, along with smaller mound groups (Landen Mounds, Moar Mound and Village) elsewhere in the county. None of these sites lie within Mason's boundaries.

Nations recorded here: Miami, Shawnee, Hopewell culture, Adena culture, Fort Ancient culture.

Timeline

  1. — William Mason, a Revolutionary War veteran, buys 640 acres at auction for $1,700 in what is now downtown Mason, on land between the Great and Little Miami Rivers.
  2. — Mason plats 16 lots on the tract and names the settlement 'Palmira,' with Main Street deliberately angled to give it an east-west orientation along the existing Cincinnati-Columbus road.
  3. — The village, recorded as Palmyra and briefly known as Kirkwood, is officially renamed Mason after residents learn another Ohio post office already used the name Palmyra.
  4. — The Ohio General Assembly enacts Mason's incorporation as a village on January 22, 1839; residents formally accept it in March 1840 and elect Mason Seward as first mayor.
  5. — The narrow-gauge Cincinnati & Northern Railway reaches Mason, later widened to standard gauge and renamed the Cincinnati, Lebanon and Northern in 1894.
  6. — An electric interurban trolley, the Rapid Railway, runs through the Mason area carrying workers to the King Powder Company and Peters Cartridge Company plants at nearby Kings Mills.
  7. — Main Street, long nicknamed 'Mason Jars' for its rutted, muddy condition, is paved for the first time.
  8. — Cincinnati broadcaster Powel Crosley Jr. moves his WLW radio transmitter operations to Mason, later boosting it to 500,000 watts (with President Franklin D. Roosevelt formally switching on the super-power signal on May 2, 1934), making it briefly the most powerful commercial radio station in the country.
  9. — Mason voters approve a home-rule governing charter in 1969; with population past 5,000 the village becomes the City of Mason in 1971.
  10. — Kings Island amusement park opens on April 29, 1972, on former farmland in Mason after Taft Broadcasting relocated Coney Island from its flood-prone site on the Ohio River.
  11. — Cincinnati's professional tennis tournament, previously held at Coney Island, breaks ground on a permanent stadium in Mason (using bleachers trucked up from Coney Island for its first Center Court), the future Lindner Family Tennis Center.
  12. — The Cincinnati Water Works begins selling water to Mason on a wholesale basis.
  13. — Greater Cincinnati Water Works (GCWW) assumes full operation of Mason's water treatment plant and distribution system under a 30-year agreement.

Stories

From Coney Island to Kings Island

For decades, Cincinnatians took the trolley or drove to Coney Island, an amusement park hugging a bend of the flood-prone Ohio River. A catastrophic 1964 flood put the park under more than 14 feet of water and convinced its owners the site had no future. In July 1969, Taft Broadcasting bought Coney Island for $6.5 million along with 1,600 acres of farmland in Mason for $3.2 million, and construction began in June 1970. When Kings Island opened its gates on April 29, 1972, it carried pieces of the old park with it: rides were trucked up, and some of Coney Island's ginkgo trees were transplanted to line the new Coney Mall. The wooden coaster The Racer became an instant sensation credited with reviving roller coaster design nationwide, and stunts like Karl Wallenda's 1974 tightrope walk and Evel Knievel's 1975 bus jump kept the park in the national spotlight. What had been quiet Mason farmland was now a regional destination, and the town's population and tax base began climbing within a few years.

The tennis stadium built on borrowed bleachers

Cincinnati's tennis tournament, first played in 1899, is the oldest tournament in the United States still contested in its original city. By the 1970s it had moved to Coney Island, but the same riverside flooding that doomed the amusement park threatened the tennis event too. In 1979, tournament organizers accepted an offer from Taft Broadcasting chairman Charles Mechem to build a permanent home on land next to Kings Island in Mason. The first four courts were modest, and for Center Court the grounds crew literally hauled the old bleachers from Coney Island up Interstate 71 and set them around one court. Those borrowed stands were soon replaced by permanent construction, and the facility - later named the Lindner Family Tennis Center - grew through repeated expansions (1981, 1987, 1990, 1998, 2010, 2011, and a 2025 addition) into a 31-court, five-stadium complex, the only tennis venue outside the four Grand Slams with more than two permanent stadia. The tournament, known for years as the Western & Southern Open, reclaimed the name Cincinnati Open for its 2024 edition.

The nation's loudest radio station

In 1928 Cincinnati broadcaster Powel Crosley Jr. moved the transmitter for his station WLW to a site in Mason and kept boosting its power. By 1934 WLW was broadcasting at 500,000 watts from an 831-foot Blaw-Knox diamond-shaped antenna, ten times the strength of any other station in the country; President Franklin Roosevelt threw the switch for the super-power signal by remote control on May 2, 1934. Complaints about interference eventually got the power capped back to 50,000 watts, but the tower still stands as a Mason landmark.

An escaped troop of baboons

Ten days before Kings Island opened in 1976, about 50 olive baboons brought in for the park's Lion Country Safari scaled their supposedly escape-proof 12-foot fence and scattered. Handlers rounded up most of them with tranquilizer-laced fruit and wooden traps; one baboon that made it 20 miles from the park resisted capture and was shot. The animals were shipped back to the Michigan company that had sold them.

Mostly estimated. Only 2% of these days come from a gauge standing inside Mason - the rest are worked out from the nearest gauges around it, so read them as close estimates rather than readings.

48,189 days of records, 1893-01-01 to 2026-10-29. Source: NOAA NCEI GHCN-Daily, 3,240 gauges in and around Ohio. A day is "gauged" when a gauge standing inside the boundary reported it, and the value is the mean of those gauges. Otherwise it is interpolated by inverse distance from every gauge reporting within 50 miles. Nothing is carried forward, back-filled or smoothed. Against NOAA nClimDiv county monthly precipitation over 136,848 complete county-months (checked 2026-10-31): correlation 0.9515, median absolute difference 0.217 in a month. Built 2026-10-31 from the Cracked Buckeye precipitation archive. Snow is the softer number — snowfall is measured by hand with a ruler, no agency publishes a gridded county snowfall series, and blowing snow defeats every observer.

Facilities are placed on the map from Ohio EPA's own map layers, EPA's Facility Registry, coordinates written in the filings, or a geocoded street address. A permit filed under a private person's name (most are household septic systems) is counted but never named, placed or linked; licenses for individual workers and open-burning notices are left out entirely.
