How Guernsey County began

Guernsey County was formed by the Ohio General Assembly on March 10, 1810, from portions of Muskingum and Belmont counties, and reached its present boundaries in 1851, when Buffalo, Beaver, Olive and Seneca townships went to the new Noble County. It is named for the Isle of Guernsey in the English Channel, home to a group of Guernsey-born settlers who arrived in 1806 and, by local tradition, stayed at the crossing of Wills Creek rather than move on further west. That crossing became Cambridge, platted in 1806 where Zane's Trace (blazed 1796-97) forded Wills Creek at an 1798 ferry site, and the town grew into the county seat and, after 1828, a National Road town known for its surviving S-shaped bridges. The county's eastern Appalachian-foothills terrain saw little permanent Native settlement compared to counties further north and west, its record instead built on Zane's Trace, the National Road, coal mining, and glass and pottery manufacturing in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries.

Cambridge became county seat in 1810. Sarchet's 1911 county history says that at the formation of the county Beymerstown, eight miles east on the old Wheeling road, aspired to be the shire town, and that after log-rolling and bad blood between the rival towns the committee accepted the proposition of Beatty and Gomber to donate the public grounds and finish the buildings ready for the roof; the committee's report is dated April 20, 1810. Sarchet adds that friends of Washington (now Old Washington) renewed the seat question later, and the Wikipedia articles cited here name Washington as the rival whose offer Cambridge's proprietors matched. The present Guernsey County Courthouse, a Second Empire building on U.S. Route 40 designed by Joseph W. Yost with T.B. Townsend, had its cornerstone laid August 4, 1881, and was dedicated September 11, 1883; it was listed on the National Register of Historic Places July 16, 1973 (reference 73001452).

How did Guernsey County get its name?

The county is named for the Isle of Guernsey in the English Channel, from which a group of the area's earliest settlers had emigrated; local tradition holds the party settled at the Wills Creek crossing in 1806 because the women in the group refused to travel farther west. Source
