How Cambridge Township, Guernsey County began

Cambridge Township, which surrounds the county seat, was one of Guernsey County's five original townships and dates its history from April 23, 1810; it gained the south row of Wheeling Township's sections in 1819. The 1911 county history names a Mr. Graham, who settled here in 1798, as the first white resident of the county; his was then the only dwelling between Wheeling and Zanesville. Wills Creek winds north to south through the township's five-by-seven-mile area with two large oxbow bends above the city, and the National Road and the two railroads cross here. By 1911 coal mining was its main industry outside the city, alongside farming and stock raising.

Settled 1798 (a Mr. Graham, the first white man to settle in the county), platted June 2, 1806 (town of Cambridge, by Jacob Gomber and Zaccheus A. Beatty), incorporated April 23, 1810, as an original township, by organized with Guernsey County.

Where the name comes from

Named for the city of Cambridge at its center; the township is the only one of that name in Ohio.

Before the town

In 1791 or 1792 a party of seven frontiersmen returning from a horse raid on the Native towns near the headwaters of the Sandusky and Muskingum camped on Wills Creek not far from the future site of Cambridge, where a war party attacked them before dawn and killed three; Howe's Historical Collections gives the account from John McDonald, and names neither the nation nor the exact spot.

Nations recorded here: Lenape (Delaware), Shawnee, Mingo (Seneca-Cayuga).

  • Attack on the Whetzel horse-raiding party (battle) — on Wills Creek, not far from the later site of Cambridge, 1791 or 1792 (archive.org)

Stories

A township built around its county seat

Unlike most Ohio townships, Cambridge Township's history is inseparable from the city at its heart. When Guernsey County organized in 1810, the township and the town of Cambridge (already a decade-old ferry crossing on Zane's Trace) were laid out together, and the township took the town's name rather than the other way around. Away from the city itself, the township remained farmland, its most visible historic landmark today being the Broom-Braden Stone House, a stone farmhouse north of Cambridge on Reed Road that was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1980.

The fight on Wills Creek

In 1791 or 1792, according to John McDonald's account printed by Henry Howe, seven men from the Virginia side of the Ohio, among them John Whetzel, William McCullough, John Hough, Thomas Biggs, Joseph Hedges, Kinzie Dickerson and a Mr. Linn, crossed into the Ohio country to take horses from the Native towns near the headwaters of the Sandusky and Muskingum. They started home with fifteen horses and on the second evening reached Wills Creek, not far from where Cambridge now stands, and camped there because Linn had fallen ill. Before daybreak the guard noticed the stream had turned muddy, but the men decided raccoons had stirred it. A war party had in fact come down the creek bed, and it fired into the camp, killing Linn, Biggs and Hedges. The four survivors reached Wheeling without arms or provisions, and Captain John McCullough led a party back to bury the dead.
