How Byesville began

Byesville was platted on July 1, 1856, and named for Jonathan Bye, owner of a local sawmill and general store, and was incorporated as a village in 1881 or 1882. Coal mining began to tie the village's fortunes together when the old Central mine started up in 1877; by 1910 about twenty coal mines blew their whistles daily, and the census counted 3,156 residents, the peak. The 2020 census counted 2,364.

Platted 1856, incorporated 1881, by named for Jonathan Bye, mill owner.

Where the name comes from

Named for Jonathan Bye, who owned a mill at the site before the village was platted.

Before the town

Sarchet's 1911 county history lists 'Old Town, above Byesville' among at least five Indian towns in Guernsey County, and says tribes resorted to Guernsey waters for the fish and the riffles where they could set their fish baskets.

Nations recorded here: Lenape (Delaware), Shawnee, Mingo (Seneca-Cayuga).

Stories

Gas, glass and a streetcar

Byesville in the 1890s was changing fast. Natural gas was piped in during 1898 and used universally for street lighting and cooking, and in November 1899 the electric railroad from Cambridge arrived. The village paid bonuses to bring in factories: eight thousand dollars for a tile works, and twenty thousand for the Byesville Glass and Lamp Company, whose sixty-five-thousand-dollar plant operated seven years and employed over two hundred workmen, with a payroll of six thousand dollars each two weeks at its height. The coal mines were still, Sarchet wrote in 1911, 'the life of Byesville today.' Boards had given way to cement and brick walks, three miles of them, and the volunteer fire department of about sixty-five members drew its water from seven street cisterns.

Estimated, not measured. No rain gauge has ever stood inside Byesville, so every figure here is worked out from the gauges around it - the nearest ones weighted most. Treat them as close estimates rather than readings.

A day is "gauged" when a gauge standing inside the boundary reported it, and the value is the mean of those gauges. Otherwise it is interpolated by inverse distance from every gauge reporting within 50 miles. Nothing is carried forward, back-filled or smoothed. Against NOAA nClimDiv county monthly precipitation over 136,848 complete county-months (checked 2026-11-01): correlation 0.9515, median absolute difference 0.217 in a month. Built 2026-11-01 from the Cracked Buckeye precipitation archive. Snow is the softer number — snowfall is measured by hand with a ruler, no agency publishes a gridded county snowfall series, and blowing snow defeats every observer.
