How Westland Township, Guernsey County began
Westland Township, in the southwestern corner of Guernsey County, was one of the county's five original townships, set up on April 23, 1810, with its first election that June. It lost its northern part when Knox Township was formed in 1819 and more when Adams Township was set off in 1827, leaving a hilly five-mile square crossed at its northwestern corner by Crooked Creek, the National Road and the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad. Isaac Grumman, who arrived in 1806 or earlier, is the first settler the histories name, and Claysville, platted by Ford Barnes in 1828, is the township's only village. It remains rural, with the Barnett-Criss House and the Claysville School on the National Register of Historic Places.
Settled 1806 (Isaac Grumman; the 1911 history gives 1800), incorporated April 23, 1810, as an original township; first election June 1810, by Guernsey County commissioners.
Where the name comes from
No source consulted explains the name. Westland was one of the five townships named when the county was organized in 1810 and it lay on the county's western edge, but no history says that is why it was named; the earlier note calling it a west-plus-land name was not supported by the Wikipedia article it cited and has been withdrawn.
Before the town
No Native village, trail or mound specific to Westland Township is recorded in the 1882 or 1911 county histories. Across Guernsey County, the record shows Lenape (Delaware), Shawnee and Mingo presence along Wills Creek and its tributaries.

Stories
A township of farms and crossroads
Westland Township has no village or city of its own; its history is that of farms, crossroads, and one-room schools. The Barnett-Criss House, a farmhouse southwest of Cambridge, and the Claysville School, standing north of the small community of Claysville that was platted by Ford Barnes in 1828, are the township's two entries on the National Register of Historic Places, both listed for their vernacular 19th-century construction rather than for any single dramatic event.
Beulah church at Claysville
The Presbyterian churches of Senecaville and Washington long shared their ministers. After Rev. William Ferguson's pastorate ended in 1862, that arrangement was dissolved and Senecaville was joined instead with the church of Beulah at Claysville. Rev. W. R. Miller divided his time equally between the two congregations until he resigned in 1867; Rev. C. W. Courtwright followed in 1868, and Rev. R. B. Porter served Senecaville and Beulah from 1874 to 1876. After Porter left, the older tie with Washington was restored. The 1895 county record tells the same sequence in its history of the Senecaville church.
