How Jackson Township, Guernsey County began

Jackson Township, second from the western and southern lines of Guernsey County, was organized in June 1824 and named for General Andrew Jackson. Settlers were here earlier, when the land lay in Buffalo Township: the Shriver family came in 1809, and when the Weirs family arrived in 1816 there were twelve houses in what is now the township. Wills Creek runs north through it, and after about 1866 its hills of coal and the railroad built in the 1870s made it a mining district centered on Byesville, the township's only platted village until Midway in 1904. County tradition places a Native town, called Old Town, just above Byesville.

Settled 1809 (Adam Shriver's family), incorporated June 1824, by organized by the Guernsey County commissioners.

Where the name comes from

Named for General Andrew Jackson, who later became the seventh President of the United States.

Before the town

Guernsey County oral and written tradition places one of the region's Native towns, 'Old Town,' just above Byesville, which lies within this township — making it the site specific to Jackson Township named in available sources. The township as a whole was within the range of Delaware, Shawnee, Seneca and Mingo people who fished and lived along Wills Creek and its tributaries before the 1830s removals; no other village, trail, or mound specific to the township was found.

Nations recorded here: Lenape (Delaware), Shawnee, Mingo (Seneca-Cayuga).

Timeline

  1. — The Shriver family left Pennsylvania and settled in what is now Jackson Township, then part of Buffalo Township; Elijah Shriver, born there in 1810, was among the first children born in the county.
  2. — Benjamin Weirs's family came from Harrison County, Virginia; there were then only twelve houses in the township as later bounded.
  3. — David Williams, a Scottish weaver, came with his brother-in-law Robert Nicholson and paid for his 120-acre farm with weaving done for neighbors.
  4. — Jackson Township was organized and named for Andrew Jackson.
  5. — The township had 1,155 residents; in 1880 it had 1,140.
  6. — Byesville, within the township, was platted by/for Jonathan Bye, owner of a local mill.
  7. — The old Central mine opened near Byesville, the village's first coal mine; six men lost their lives in it.
  8. — Byesville was incorporated as a village.
  9. — Andrew W. Nicholson's 400 acres, two or three miles south of Cambridge, yielded from 500,000 to a million bushels of coal, mined on royalty by the Ohio Coal Company.
  10. — Mike Stifka platted Midway on October 31, on lot 35 in Jackson Township.

Stories

A township named for a future president

Jackson Township was organized in 1824, while Andrew Jackson was still a senator and general rather than president — Ohioans across the state named townships for him in these years in anticipation of, and later in celebration of, his rise to the presidency in 1828. The township's own story is largely that of Byesville, the coal-mining village platted within it in 1856, though the southern edge of the county seat, Cambridge, also falls within its northern boundary.

Jonathan Bye's mill and boats

Byesville is named for Jonathan Bye, a man of Quaker parentage who owned the land where it stands. He built the flouring mill long known as Bye's Mill and kept a country store beside it. To sell his surplus flour he built flatboats and keelboats and floated them down Wills Creek to markets on the Ohio and Mississippi rivers, and he built boats for the Ohio Canal as well; one, the Maria Bye, named for his daughter, worked the canal for years. Bye left Guernsey County in the 1850s for Sterling, Illinois, where he built large mills that failed. The 1911 history adds that his old mill in Byesville was later destroyed by fire.

The man said to have lived 124 years

In 1837 William Rainey Sr. left Washington County, Pennsylvania, for Jackson Township with his wife's stepfather, Andrew Whittier, and the family built a rough cabin on lots 28 and 29 of the military lands. The 1882 county history, repeated in 1911, says Whittier was born in Germany in 1716, came to Baltimore before the Revolution when only a few cabins stood there, and died at the age of 124. No other source was found to test the claim, and a birth year of 1716 would put him past 120 when the family moved to Ohio. Rainey died in 1880 at 84, and his son William Jr. was still farming the home place in 1882.
