How Fairview began
Fairview was platted March 24, 1814, by Hugh Gillaland on the southeast quarter of section 2, township 10, range 7, and straddles the line between Oxford Township, Guernsey County, and Kirkwood Township, Belmont County. Its name is commendatory, chosen for the pleasantness of the site rather than for a person or place. A post office opened in 1823 and ran for 168 years, closing in 1991, and the village supported enough commerce and culture in its prime to build the Pennyroyal Opera House; it reached a peak population of 444 in 1850 and has declined steadily since, to 67 residents at the 2020 census. Confederate general Walter P. Lane spent part of his childhood in Fairview after his family emigrated there from Ireland in 1821.

Where the name comes from
The name is recorded as commendatory -- chosen to describe the pleasant appearance or outlook of the site, in the pattern of many small Ohio village names, rather than for a founder, settler, or other place.
Before the town
No Native American village, camp, or site specific to Fairview or Oxford Township was found in the sources checked. The general county-wide record -- Wyandot, Shawnee, Lenape (Delaware) and Mingo peoples using the county's hill country chiefly as hunting ground rather than as a place of permanent towns -- applies to this part of the county as elsewhere; named village sites and camps are recorded in other townships.
Nations recorded here: Wyandot, Lenape (Delaware), Shawnee, Mingo (Seneca-Cayuga).

Stories
A Confederate general's boyhood stop
Walter Paye Lane was born in County Cork, Ireland, in 1817, and was still a small child when his family emigrated and settled in Fairview, Guernsey County, in 1821. The family did not stay long, moving on to Kentucky by 1825, but Fairview was one of Lane's first homes in America. He went on to an extraordinary military career spanning three flags: he fought for the Republic of Texas, served the United States in the Mexican-American War, and ended the Civil War as a Confederate brigadier general, a promotion confirmed on the very last day the Confederate Congress met in 1865. A brief passage through a Guernsey County farm village was an unlikely starting point for a life spent almost entirely on horseback and at war.
An opera house for a village of a few hundred
At its nineteenth-century peak, Fairview supported enough commerce, church life and civic ambition to build the Pennyroyal Opera House, a building substantial enough to still stand and be photographed generations later. The opera house is one of a handful of surviving landmarks -- alongside the village's churches and its town hall -- that mark the years when Fairview's population approached 450 and the village anchored the surrounding farmland along the Guernsey-Belmont county line, before the long population decline that has left it at under 70 residents today.

Estimated, not measured. No rain gauge has ever stood inside Fairview, so every figure here is worked out from the gauges around it - the nearest ones weighted most. Treat them as close estimates rather than readings.
49,131 days of records, 1891-11-01 to 2026-10-29. Source: NOAA NCEI GHCN-Daily, 3,240 gauges in and around Ohio. A day is "gauged" when a gauge standing inside the boundary reported it, and the value is the mean of those gauges. Otherwise it is interpolated by inverse distance from every gauge reporting within 50 miles. Nothing is carried forward, back-filled or smoothed. Against NOAA nClimDiv county monthly precipitation over 136,848 complete county-months (checked 2026-10-31): correlation 0.9515, median absolute difference 0.217 in a month. Built 2026-10-31 from the Cracked Buckeye precipitation archive. Snow is the softer number — snowfall is measured by hand with a ruler, no agency publishes a gridded county snowfall series, and blowing snow defeats every observer.
