How Madison Township, Guernsey County began

Madison Township, second from the northern and eastern lines of Guernsey County, held its first election on July 28, 1810, at Absalom Martin's house; until 1816 it also took in the land that became Jefferson Township. Edward Bratton, its first settler, pitched his tent in 1805 at the site of Winchester, where five Native families were then living nearby. Its two villages are Antrim, on the old Cambridge-to-Steubenville road, and Winchester, platted in 1836. At Antrim, Madison College grew from eight students in a log cabin about 1835 to a brick college that admitted women and men, before it collapsed at the start of the Civil War.

Settled 1805 (Edward Bratton, at the site of Winchester), incorporated first township election July 28, 1810, by officers elected at the house of Absalom Martin.

Where the name comes from

No source consulted explains the name. The township was organized in July 1810, while James Madison was president, but none of the 1882, 1895 or 1911 county histories says it was named for him.

Before the town

When Edward Bratton settled at the site of Winchester in 1805, the county histories record five Native families living in the vicinity: two brothers known as Jim and Bill Lyons, whose huts stood up the creek bottom; Joseph Sky, at the mouth of Brushy Fork near the later Linn's mill; a man named Doubty, with a hut between the later Culbertson and Newman Lake farms; and a man named Hunter. The histories do not name their nation. A settler descendant also recalled that when his grandfather bought land here in 1809 several tribes lived nearby. Bratton reached the site along the trail of General Brodhead's 1781 expedition from Wheeling on the Coshocton campaign against the Indians, which entered the site of Antrim, ran along the ridge and then turned west along the old Newcomerstown road. Joseph Sky's place at Linn's mill may lie in present Jefferson Township, since the histories place that mill there.

Timeline

  1. — Edward Bratton married and followed Brodhead's old trail and the government road to the site of Winchester, where he pitched his tent; his nearest white neighbors were the Carpenters near Londonderry and the Beattys at Cambridge.
  2. — Nathan Huffman's grandfather bought land in the township at a time when, the family recalled, several tribes of Indians lived nearby.
  3. — A meeting was held at the house of Absalom Martin on July 28 to elect Madison Township's first officers, as Guernsey County itself was being organized from parts of Belmont and Muskingum counties.
  4. — On June 3 the county commissioners created Jefferson Township from the west of Madison and Londonderry Township from parts of Madison and Oxford.
  5. — Antrim was laid out by A. Alexander, who platted twenty-four lots on both sides of the old Cambridge-to-Steubenville road, according to the 1882 history; the 1911 history dates the plat to March 1, 1830.
  6. — William Risk, Antrim's first blacksmith, settled there, and Rev. Mr. Riddle, an Associate Presbyterian and the township's first preacher, came to the neighborhood.
  7. — Dr. Findley enrolled eight boys and young men and taught them in his log cabin at Antrim, the beginning of Madison College; the histories give the year as 1835 or 1836.
  8. — Isaac Bonnell platted Winchester on August 18, on section 14.
  9. — The township had 1,569 residents; by 1880 it had 1,160.
  10. — Madison College advertised its November session at ten dollars tuition and assured readers that Antrim was not unhealthy, as rumor had it.
  11. — In July the Union column pursuing Morgan's raiders halted at Winchester in the night and regrouped at Antrim before riding on toward Londonderry.

Stories

Madison College at Antrim

When the township was organized, sections 1, 2, 9 and 10 were reserved as school lands, leased to settlers and later sold, and A. Alexander bought a quarter of section 10 and laid out Antrim on it. Dr. Findley bought the land to the west and, in May of 1835 or 1836, began teaching eight boys and young men in his log cabin. The neighborhood gave money, materials and labor for a two-story brick building at the east end of the village, built by David White, and the school took the name Madison College, with Findley as president. In 1846 Rev. Samuel Mehaffey, the local Old School Presbyterian pastor, became president, and the 1882 history blames the practice of making the pastor president for the college's decline. Under a new charter and Rev. Samuel Findley Jr. it admitted women as well as men, and it borrowed to put up a larger building over local opposition. With creditors pressing and the Civil War beginning, the college closed and never reopened.

Edward Bratton, the first settler

Edward Bratton was born in Mifflin County, Pennsylvania, in 1784 and crossed the Ohio at Wheeling with his father in December 1799. As a young man he split rails at fifty cents a hundred for Joseph Wright, who needed pens to keep his stock from wolves and bears. In 1805 he married and followed the old trail of Brodhead's 1781 expedition to the site of Antrim, then the government road toward Zane's crossing, and camped at the site of Winchester. For years he took his grain thirty-four miles, to a mill four miles northeast of St. Clairsville, until a horse mill was built at Morristown. He later took over the land entry of his neighbor Martin Stull, who died the spring after he arrived, and he eventually moved to Jefferson Township.
