How Richland County began

Richland County was created by the Ohio legislature in 1808 out of land ceded by Native nations only three years earlier, and organized for government in 1813; it took its name from the fertile soil early surveyors found there. Mansfield, platted in June 1808 by James Hedges, Joseph Larwell and Jacob Newman and named for U.S. Surveyor General Jared Mansfield, became and remains the county seat. The county was the scene of one of Ohio's last violent Indian removals during the War of 1812, then grew through farming, milling, and after the 1850s a wave of railroads that made Mansfield a manufacturing city (stoves, brass goods, tires) and, from 1896, the site of the Ohio State Reformatory. Ashland County was carved from Richland's eastern townships in 1846, giving the county its present, slightly smaller shape.
