Stories

A thousand uninvited wedding guests

Bogart and Bromfield had been friends since their early days in New York, so when Bogart married Lauren Bacall on May 21, 1945, the wedding was held at Malabar Farm, with Bromfield as best man. The couple had planned to marry on the terrace. Word reportedly got out through a local telephone operator, and about a thousand uninvited people showed up in Pleasant Valley, so the ceremony moved inside to the entrance hall of the Big House. The newlyweds spent their honeymoon on the farm.

Doris Duke's $30,000 check

After Bromfield died in 1956, loggers had already blazed trees in Malabar's old woods, and developers eyed the farm for a dude ranch and golf course. Friends of the Land, the conservation group Bromfield had helped found, set out to buy the farm from his estate for $145,000 by a May 1957 deadline. James Cagney and Lauren Bacall each gave $1,000, Walt Disney spoke up for the farm, and schoolchildren in Ohio, Indiana, Illinois and Iowa collected pennies. The drive still fell short until Bromfield's friend Doris Duke called and sent a check for $30,000, which closed the deal. The farm put up a sign honoring her in 1957 at the edge of the woods. In 2021 Ohio law set aside 120 acres of the park's most mature hardwood forest, between Bromfield Road and State Route 95, as the Doris Duke Woods, off limits to timber removal.

Guests had to work

Hollywood friends visited Malabar often, but Bromfield expected guests to pitch in on the farm. James Cagney once sold vegetables at the farm's roadside stand. When the house was full, overflow guests were sent to a local restaurant. A weekend cabin built on the land by his friend George Pugh later appeared in the film The Shawshank Redemption.
