How Harrison County began

Harrison County was organized on February 1, 1813 from parts of Jefferson and Tuscarawas Counties and named for General William Henry Harrison, hero of the 1811 Battle of Tippecanoe and later ninth U.S. president. Its seat, Cadiz, had already been platted in 1803 at the junction of roads from Pittsburgh and Washington, Pennsylvania. The land had been ceded by Native nations in the general Ohio cessions of the 1780s and 1795 before American settlers, many of them English, Scots-Irish, and German farm families, arrived from the mid-1790s onward. Nineteenth-century Harrison County's economy ran through agriculture, coal, brief but intense oil booms at Scio and Jewett in the 1890s, and small manufacturing (the Jewett Car Company's streetcars); in the twenty-first century, Marcellus and Utica shale gas processing has become a major employer. It remains Ohio's fifth-least-populous county, with about 14,500 residents in 2020.
