How Cadiz Township, Harrison County began

Cadiz Township surrounds the county seat of Cadiz, laid out by Zaccheus A. Beatty and Zaccheus Biggs at the junction of roads running west from Pittsburgh and from Washington, Pennsylvania -- a plat acknowledged in October 1804, though period sources give both 1803 and 1804 for the founding. Outside the village, the township's earliest documented settlers arrived from 1801, mainly from Pennsylvania. Within the township, the community first platted as Pennsville in 1851 by Joseph Penn later became known as Cadiz Junction, sited where the Pittsburgh, Cincinnati and St. Louis Railroad met a branch line from Cadiz that opened in 1854.

Settled 1801 (township); 1803 or 1804 (Cadiz village, disputed), platted plat acknowledged October 29, 1804, by Zaccheus A. Beatty and Zaccheus Biggs.

Where the name comes from

The township takes its name from Cadiz, the county seat within it, itself named for the Spanish port city of Cádiz.

Before the town

No Native American village, mound, or treaty boundary specific to Cadiz Township is recorded; the land was included in the general Ohio cessions of the 1780s-1790s (Treaty of Fort McIntosh, 1785, and Treaty of Greenville, 1795) before organized American settlement began, and it lay within range of Mingo, Delaware (Lenape), and Shawnee hunting and travel along the Ohio River tributaries.

Nations recorded here: Mingo (Seneca-Cayuga), Delaware (Lenape), Shawnee.

Timeline

  1. — Alexander Henderson of Washington County, Pennsylvania, squats in April on the southwest corner of the section where Cadiz now stands, according to Henry Howe quoted by Hanna.
  2. — Adam Ross, from York County, Pennsylvania, settles in Cadiz Township outside the future village, among the earliest documented settlers named in the county's 1900 history; Robert Wilkin, also from Pennsylvania, arrives before 1802.
  3. — Cadiz is laid out by Zaccheus A. Beatty and Zaccheus Biggs at the junction of the Pittsburgh-Steubenville road and the Washington, Pa.-Wellsburg road; the plat is acknowledged before a justice of the peace on October 29, 1804, and recorded the same day at Steubenville, Jefferson County (Harrison County was not yet organized). Period sources disagree on whether the town was actually laid out in 1803 or 1804.
  4. — Cadiz Township is organized while the area is still part of Jefferson County.
  5. — Robert Cochran, from Allegheny County, Pennsylvania, buys 80 acres half a mile north of Cadiz for $200 and in the winter of 1804-05 builds a two-story wooden horse-powered gristmill, the first mill west of Daniel Welch's at Beech Spring.
  6. — Cadiz holds its first Fourth of July celebration, with venison, wild turkey, bear meat, and rye whiskey shared by townspeople and country residents alike; the same year sees the first recorded lot sale in the village, to John Finney for twenty dollars.
  7. — Henry Howe's 1847 "Historical Collections of Ohio" describes thirteen households in Cadiz as of this year, including Jacob Arnold (inn-keeper), Andrew McNeeley (hatter and justice of the peace), Joseph Harris (merchant), John Jamison (tanner), and Sarah "Granny" Young, a midwife and baker later elected justice of the peace by the township in "a fit of hilarity," an election voided because women could not then hold office in Ohio.
  8. — Harrison County commissioners give the township its present form and size.
  9. — Joseph Penn plats the community of Pennsville within the township.
  10. — A branch railroad line from Cadiz opens, meeting the Pittsburgh, Cincinnati and St. Louis Railroad at Pennsville, later known as Cadiz Junction.
  11. — The census counts 3,041 people in the township.
  12. — The township has 2,993 people.
  13. — The township has 3,076 people.
  14. — The township has 3,109 people including Cadiz village (2,084); a spur of the Pennsylvania runs from Cadiz Junction to Cadiz and motor buses connect with the Wheeling & Lake Erie at East Cadiz.
  15. — The census counts 3,387 people in the township.

Stories

Granny Young, midwife, baker, and disqualified justice of the peace

Among the thirteen households Henry Howe recorded in Cadiz in 1807 was "old Granny" Sarah Young, the village midwife and baker, whose home stood on the site that continued as a bakery for decades afterward. Some years later the citizens of the township, in what Hanna's 1900 history calls "a fit of hilarity," elected her to the office of justice of the peace. The election could not stand: Ohio law of the period did not permit women to hold public office, and Young was obliged to forgo the position.

The horse mill north of Cadiz

Robert Cochran was born in 1771 in what is now Dauphin County, Pennsylvania, came to Allegheny County at eighteen, and shortly after 1803 bought eighty acres half a mile north of the future Cadiz for $200. He built a pole cabin with a stick chimney and puncheon floor, and in the fall and winter of 1804-05 hired a millwright and axemen to put up a two-story grist-mill driven by horse power. No iron went into it except bands round the trundle head and spindle, and every wheel and part was hand-made of wood because there was no sawmill in the county. The millstones were brought down the Ohio to Steubenville and hauled four days across country. Farmers came from miles around, and while they waited their turn some threw tomahawks at marks on trees. It ran day and night except Sundays, and in dry seasons, when water mills failed, neighbours came back to it. It was the first mill west of Daniel Welch's at Beech Spring, and Cochran's descendants still held the land in 1900.
