How Athens Township, Harrison County began

Athens Township, on the southern line of Harrison County beside Belmont County, was organized by the county commissioners on December 6, 1824, with German, Moorefield, Freeport and Washington townships. Settlers from Washington and Fayette Counties, Pennsylvania, were on the land from 1805. The township holds New Athens, which the Rev. John Walker and John McConnell platted on February 10, 1817 for Walker's classical school; chartered in 1825 as Franklin College, it became known across eastern Ohio as an abolitionist stronghold and closed in 1919. Along the headwaters of the Little Stillwater Creek stood three mills, and about 1872-73 Oliver H. Burdette of New Athens built an early steam-driven wagon. The township had 1,195 people in 1890 and 390 in 2020.

Settled 1805 (Samuel Hanna, George McConnell, Robert McCracken), incorporated December 6, 1824 (organized as a township by the county commissioners), by Harrison County commissioners.

Where the name comes from

The township shares the name of New Athens, the town John Walker and John McConnell laid out in 1817 beside Walker's classical school. Hanna says Walker wanted to establish a classical school and, when no village would take it up, laid out a town on his and a neighbor's land that they named New Athens; the sources do not say why the name Athens was chosen.

Before the town

No Native village, mound, burial or battle site is recorded for Athens Township in the sources consulted (Hanna's 1900 county history, Lewis's 1921 county history, the township and village chapters). What the record does show is regional. The 1785 Treaty of Fort McIntosh, signed with the Wyandot, Delaware (Lenape), Ojibwe and Odawa, claimed most of eastern and southern Ohio for the United States, though many Native leaders rejected it, and the 1795 Treaty of Greenville confirmed the cession after Fallen Timbers. Hanna notes that the first routes into Harrison County were probably old Indian trails along streams and ridge tops, and cites Archer Butler Hulbert's 1900 study of Ohio's Indian thoroughfares, which traced a 'Mingo Trail' from the Mingo Bottoms (Steubenville) to Will's Town (Duncan Falls) crossing the county a short distance south of Cadiz. The first settlers to reach Short Creek in 1796 included former government Indian scouts paid in land, and Hanna describes the county's earliest white visitors as Indian fighters, scouts and hunters from the Ohio River frontier. Hulbert's Mingo Trail ran a short distance south of Cadiz, which may place it near this township's northern edge, but Hanna does not name the townships it crossed.

Nations recorded here: Mingo (Seneca-Cayuga), Delaware (Lenape), Shawnee.

Timeline

  1. — George Brokaw, of Huguenot descent and a Revolutionary War veteran, moves from Pennsylvania to Green Township and later settles in Athens Township; his son John, born 1793, dies in the township on March 25, 1876.
  2. — Samuel Hanna, George McConnell and Robert McCracken, all from Washington County, Pennsylvania, are the earliest settlers recorded for Athens Township; by 1813 the roll names about forty families, most from Fayette and Washington Counties.
  3. — Simpson Bethel (from Loudoun County, Virginia), David Drake, William Dunlap, James McDowell and Samuel McDowell Jr., John McConnell, John McCoy and Jacob Webb settle in the township.
  4. — Rev. John Walker and John McConnell plat New Athens; the plat is filed the same day.
  5. — A post office opens at New Athens and has operated since.
  6. — The county commissioners organize Athens Township, with German, Moorefield, Freeport and Washington townships, on the same day.
  7. — The Ohio legislature charters Alma College at New Athens, renamed Franklin College at its next session; Rev. William McMillan is elected president and the college is organized on June 8, 1825.
  8. — Samuel Jones builds the Dickerson flour and saw mill on the Little Stillwater Creek; it is rebuilt in 1852 by John and Adam Dickerson.
  9. — The college's board appoints the Rev. Edwin H. Nevin president and commits to the antislavery cause; when creditors take the college building, antislavery men raise a new one, and Nevin has the new bell cast with the words 'Proclaim Liberty Through All the Land.'
  10. — Oliver H. Burdette of New Athens drives his steam wagon twice around the track at the county fair before the horse races.
  11. — The census counts 1,195 people in Athens Township; the count is 1,081 in 1900 and 943 in 1910.
  12. — Franklin College ceases operation.
  13. — Franklin College Building No. 5 on Main Street, New Athens, is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
  14. — The census counts 390 people in the township; the Harrison Coal and Reclamation Historical Park, with its stripping shovel the Silver Spade, stands on Stumptown Road (State Route 519).

Stories

The college that rang for liberty

John Walker, a minister of the Secession church, wanted a classical school in Harrison County, and when no village would take it up he laid out New Athens with a neighbor in February 1817 and opened the school himself. A rival academy at Cadiz was seeking a charter at the same time, but Walker's tact and energy won it first, and on January 22, 1825 the legislature chartered Alma College, renamed Franklin College at its next session. By the 1830s the antislavery quarrel over the Presbyterian General Assembly split the Crabapple congregation and the college board; in 1840 the abolitionists took control under President Edwin H. Nevin, creditors seized the college building, and a pro-colonization party bought it and opened a rival 'Providence College'. The antislavery men raised funds for a new building on their church lot, so that the title could not be reached by the old creditors, and Providence College faded. Nevin had the new bell cast with 'Proclaim Liberty Through All the Land' on it. Its graduates included Gov. Wilson Shannon, Rep. John A. Bingham, and, according to Wikipedia, the former slave Titus Basfield; by Hanna's count three of its alumni sat in the U.S. Senate and 75 percent of its graduates entered the ministry.

The first steam wagon in America?

Lewis's county history says that the first steam-propelled land vehicle in the United States, 'if not the world', was the Webb and Burdette Steam Wagon, built about 1872-73 by Oliver H. Burdette of New Athens with a partner named Webb from Athens, Illinois. At the 1873 county fair Burdette ran it twice around the track before the horse races one day, then shut off the steam, raised his large black beaver hat and sang 'Mine Eyes Have Seen the Glory' to the cheering crowd. Lewis, writing in 1921, said Burdette was cheated of his patents by western machine men, that he also invented an endless chain still used on machinery, and that he died at about eighty-four, poor but respected.

Three mills on the Little Stillwater

Within four miles on the Little Stillwater Creek's headwaters stood three mills fed by one race run five miles from the stream's head. The Shannon Mill, a log-frame building on Dunlap land named for its last miller, Amon Shannon, was almost a hundred years old in 1921 and still had its twenty-foot overshot wheel. Downstream stood William Gregg's saw mill, then the Dickerson mill, built by Samuel Jones in 1832 and rebuilt in 1852, whose flour went by high-wheeled wagon to Wheeling and Bridgeport, and then Lafferty's mill. Lewis's account has some dates that conflict (the Dickerson mill is said to have been moved to Piedmont in 1886 yet converted to steam in 1872).
