How Archer Township, Harrison County began
Archer Township, in the north-central part of Harrison County, was established in 1799, predating Harrison County itself by fourteen years, and its earliest documented settler, Samuel Amspoker, arrived by 1803. Most early families came from Pennsylvania, Maryland, and what was then western Virginia. Ridge Church, the township's oldest religious organization, grew out of the Beech Spring Presbyterian congregation and moved through four building sites before settling near the village of Hanover. Archer contains no incorporated village today, and like neighboring Stock and Green Townships, it failed to raise its share of a nineteenth-century railroad subscription, a factor in the main line being routed through the county's northern townships instead.
Settled by 1803, incorporated 1799.
Where the name comes from
No origin for the name "Archer" is recorded.
Before the town
No Native American village, mound, or treaty boundary specific to Archer Township is documented; the land was included in the general Ohio cessions of the 1780s-1790s (Treaty of Fort McIntosh, 1785, and Treaty of Greenville, 1795) before organized American settlement began, and it lay within range of Mingo, Delaware (Lenape), and Shawnee hunting and travel along the Ohio River tributaries.
Nations recorded here: Mingo (Seneca-Cayuga), Delaware (Lenape), Shawnee.
Timeline
- — Archer Township is established, fourteen years before Harrison County itself was organized.
- — Samuel Amspoker settles in Archer Township, the earliest documented settler named in the county's 1900 history; other named arrivals before 1814 include John Welch (about 1801, from Pennsylvania), William Wartembe (1807, from Brooke County, (West) Va.), and Isaac Osburn (1809).
- — Edward Crawford settles in the township from Brooke County, now West Virginia; Alexander Crawford follows in 1808 and David Endsley in 1808.
- — Bazaleel Wells, the land's original patentee, deeds a portion of section 31 in the township's southeast to Morris West, an early settler whose family had already been living there for some years without formal title.
- — Archer Township takes its present boundary in March, when the county commissioners redraw the townships.
- 19th century — Ridge Church, the township's oldest religious organization and one of the oldest Presbyterian churches in Harrison County, is set off from the Beech Spring congregation; it occupies four successive sites, from the house of early settler William Barnhill to its present building near the village of Hanover, and its history is later condensed from an anniversary discourse delivered by its pastor, Rev. Robert Herron, on December 13, 1873.

Stories
The Busby well
The Jewett oil pool, which touches Archer, Green and Rumley townships, was opened in the fall of 1895 on land owned by A. M. Busby in section 35 of Archer Township. Gas from the well was piped to Jewett and burned there until the fall of 1899, when the supply was abandoned. A local company, the Jewett Oil & Gas Company, handled the property until 1896, when it was transferred to the Ohio Oil Company, which drilled further wells. By July 1901 there were seventy-five producers in the pool, eight of them gas wells, worked by the Ohio Oil Company, the Scott Oil Company and F. N. Donaldson. The oil went to Jewett, Cadiz and Scio. The success at Jewett encouraged H. A. Snyder to start leasing at Scio, where the much larger boom of 1898 followed.
