How Cadiz began

Cadiz was founded in 1803 at the meeting point of wagon roads running west from Pittsburgh and Washington, Pennsylvania, and became the seat of newly organized Harrison County in 1813. It grew as a market and courthouse town, reached by the Steubenville and Indiana Railroad in 1854, and later by a short-lived 1889 oil boom and, in the twentieth century, coal mining and natural-gas processing. It is the birthplace of actor Clark Gable (1901) and home to the county's 1895 Richardsonian Romanesque courthouse. Today Cadiz remains Harrison County's seat and largest village, its economy tied to Marcellus and Utica shale gas activity since the 2010s.

Settled 1803, platted 1803, incorporated 1813 (named county seat), by unknown; sited at the junction of the Pittsburgh and Washington, Pa. roads.

Where the name comes from

Cadiz was named after the Spanish port city of Cádiz, a naming choice typical of the period when many Ohio county-seat towns took classical or European names.

Before the town

No Native American village, mound, or treaty boundary specific to this place is documented in the sources consulted; the land was included in the general Ohio cessions of the 1780s-1790s (Treaty of Fort McIntosh, 1785, and Treaty of Greenville, 1795) before organized American settlement began, and it lay within range of Mingo, Delaware (Lenape), and Shawnee hunting and travel along the Ohio River tributaries.

Nations recorded here: Mingo (Seneca-Cayuga), Delaware (Lenape), Shawnee.

Stories

The birth of Clark Gable

On February 1, 1901, William Clark Gable was born in a small house on Charleston Street in Cadiz, the son of oil-well driller William Henry Gable and his wife Adeline, who died before her son's first birthday. The family left Cadiz while Gable was still a boy, following his father's oil-field work into Pennsylvania, but Cadiz has kept the connection alive: his birth home is preserved as a museum and gift shop, and the town holds an annual Clark Gable Birthday Celebration each winter. Gable went on to become one of Hollywood's biggest stars of the 1930s and 1940s, winning the 1934 Academy Award for Best Actor for It Happened One Night and playing Rhett Butler in Gone with the Wind (1939). Cadiz's claim on him rests on nothing more than the accident of birth, but the town has made the most of it, and the museum on Charleston Street remains a small-town point of pride.

A day is "gauged" when a gauge standing inside the boundary reported it, and the value is the mean of those gauges. Otherwise it is interpolated by inverse distance from every gauge reporting within 50 miles. Nothing is carried forward, back-filled or smoothed. Against NOAA nClimDiv county monthly precipitation over 136,848 complete county-months (checked 2026-10-31): correlation 0.9515, median absolute difference 0.217 in a month. Built 2026-10-31 from the Cracked Buckeye precipitation archive. Snow is the softer number — snowfall is measured by hand with a ruler, no agency publishes a gridded county snowfall series, and blowing snow defeats every observer.
