How North Township, Harrison County began

North Township occupies the northern part of Harrison County and contains the village of Scio, originally laid out as New Market in 1837 by proprietor George Turner. The earliest documented settlers, arriving from 1807, were Pennsylvania German families out of Somerset and Washington Counties, Pennsylvania; English farm families are recorded settling later, from about 1816. The township's economy shifted briefly but dramatically when oil was struck near Scio in 1898. Away from Scio the township remains agricultural.

Settled 1807 (Christian and Jacob Canaga), incorporated June 11, 1813 (township organized by the Harrison County commissioners).

Where the name comes from

The township is named simply for its position in the northern part of Harrison County; no other origin is recorded.

Before the town

No Native American village, mound, or treaty boundary specific to the township is documented; the land was included in the general Ohio cessions of the 1780s-1790s (Treaty of Fort McIntosh, 1785, and Treaty of Greenville, 1795) before organized American settlement began, and it lay within range of Mingo, Delaware (Lenape), and Shawnee hunting and travel along the Ohio River tributaries.

Timeline

  1. — Christian and Jacob Canaga, from Somerset County, Pennsylvania, settle in North Township, among the earliest documented settlers named in the county's 1900 history; other named arrivals before 1814 include Peter Forney (1810, from Somerset County, Pa.), Jacob Albert (1811), and Martin Boghart, Philip Creplever, James English, John and Philip Firebaugh, and Joseph Gundy (all 1812, from Somerset, Washington, and Fayette Counties, Pa.).
  2. — North Township is organized on June 11 by the Harrison County commissioners.
  3. — John Harrison settles in North Township from Yorkshire, England, among the township's earliest documented English arrivals; Christopher Hartley follows from England about 1820.
  4. — The plat of New Hanover, laid out by John Fisher on August 13, 1812, is finally filed on July 25, 1834; the village faded and, by 1921, nothing remained of it.
  5. — The village of New Market, later Scio, is platted on March 30 in section 31.
  6. — Derricks are already standing at the edge of Scio, early oil tests that failed for lack of depth.
  7. — The census counts 1,499 people in the township.
  8. — Oil is struck near Scio in June; the Scio pool, about three by five miles, lies mostly in North Township, and the boom changes the village and township within months.
  9. — The oil boom lifts the township population to 2,248.
  10. — The population falls back to 1,624 as the oil and gas wells give out.
  11. — The township has 1,478 people; the Pennsylvania and the Wheeling & Lake Erie railroads both serve Scio, and sheep raising, coal and gas remain its chief industries.

Stories

A township that rose and fell with oil

North Township was a township of sheep farms, hillside coal banks and Pennsylvania German and English families when oil changed it. Its population was 1,499 at the 1890 census. Spring-pole wells had been drilled along the edge of Scio as early as 1872, but they failed because they were not deep enough. After oil was found at Jewett in 1895, H. A. Snyder took leases on about 2,000 acres near Scio and in March 1898 organized a company to test them, and the first well was completed on June 7, 1898. By the 1900 census the township had 2,248 people. When the wells gave out the count fell to 1,624 in 1910 and 1,478 in 1920, and the county historian blamed the loss squarely on the end of the oil and gas.
