How German Township, Harrison County began

German Township occupies the northeastern part of Harrison County, five miles square, south of Carroll County and west of Jefferson County. It was settled from 1804, when George Atkinson came from Brooke County, (West) Virginia, by families from Brooke County and from Fayette, Washington and Westmoreland Counties, Pennsylvania. Its one old village, Jefferson (now Germano), was platted by Frederick Zollers in December 1815, and the Germano post office ran from 1826 to 1973. Lewis's 1921 history gives two organization dates: December 6, 1824 in one chapter, and 'after 1832' in another. The Pennsylvania lines and a Lake Erie line run through it, with stations at Germano, Carman and Cadiz Junction. The township had 1,254 people in 1890 and 702 in 2020.

Settled 1804 (George Atkinson), incorporated December 6, 1824, or after 1832 (Lewis gives both), by Harrison County commissioners.

Where the name comes from

No source consulted explains the name. The usual assumption, that it reflects the German ancestry of some early settlers, is not documented; Hanna's list of settlers before 1814 has names from Pennsylvania, Virginia and Maryland, including a few of German stock such as Pfautz, Stohl and Heisler.

Before the town

No Native village, mound, burial or battle site is recorded for German Township in the sources consulted (Hanna's 1900 county history, Lewis's 1921 county history, the township and village chapters). What the record does show is regional. The 1785 Treaty of Fort McIntosh, signed with the Wyandot, Delaware (Lenape), Ojibwe and Odawa, claimed most of eastern and southern Ohio for the United States, though many Native leaders rejected it, and the 1795 Treaty of Greenville confirmed the cession after Fallen Timbers. Hanna notes that the first routes into Harrison County were probably old Indian trails along streams and ridge tops, and cites Archer Butler Hulbert's 1900 study of Ohio's Indian thoroughfares, which traced a 'Mingo Trail' from the Mingo Bottoms (Steubenville) to Will's Town (Duncan Falls) crossing the county a short distance south of Cadiz. The first settlers to reach Short Creek in 1796 included former government Indian scouts paid in land, and Hanna describes the county's earliest white visitors as Indian fighters, scouts and hunters from the Ohio River frontier.

Nations recorded here: Mingo (Seneca-Cayuga), Delaware (Lenape), Shawnee.

Stories

A township cut in two by a survey line

Lewis's 1921 history describes German Township as 'among the later civil subdivisions' of the county, adding that 'the records are silent as to its early history.' It is five miles square, twenty-five sections, but a 'correction line' of the federal survey runs across the county and cuts the township in two, the two lower tiers of sections lying south of that line. The lines of the Pennsylvania and the Lake Erie roads gave the township stations at Germano (called Apex on the railway), Carman and Cadiz Junction, where the Cadiz branch leaves the main line; at the junction Lewis found a few small stores and shops and a restaurant, and a post office called Means.
