How Nottingham Township, Harrison County began
Nottingham Township, in south-central Harrison County, was part of Short Creek Township when Jefferson County organized it in 1803, and became its own township when Harrison County was erected on February 1, 1813. The first settlers came between 1798 and 1803: Abraham Brokaw, John Glenn, William Ingles, George Laport, Thomas Wilson, Arthur Barrett and others. William Ingles built a large double log cabin in the spring of 1802 at a fork of the great Pittsburgh road, thought to be the first hotel in the county's bounds. Rev. John Rea preached the first sermon under a tree in 1806, and the Nottingham Presbyterian congregation grew out of that mission. Nottingham has no village and, with 296 people in 2020, is the only township of its name in Ohio.
Settled 1798-1803, incorporated part of Short Creek Township (1803); separate township when Harrison County was erected February 1, 1813 (exact date of its own organization not found), by Abraham Brokaw, John Glenn, William Ingles and others.
Where the name comes from
No source states why the township was named Nottingham. Hanna's 1900 county history records that early settlers William Grist and William Phillips came from West Nottingham Township, Pennsylvania.
Before the town
No Native village or mound specific to Nottingham Township is recorded in the sources checked. Hanna's 1900 history says an Indian trail to hunting grounds in the Muskingum and Scioto country passed near the site of Nottingham Church, and describes the Mingo Trail from the Mingo Bottoms (Steubenville) to Will's Town on the Muskingum, which crosses the county a short distance south of Cadiz. The region lay east of the Cuyahoga-Muskingum line drawn at the Treaty of Fort McIntosh in 1785, and Hanna says hostile Indian forces under leaders such as Simon Girty infested the region for years after the first settlements.
Nations recorded here: Mingo (Seneca-Cayuga), Delaware (Lenape), Shawnee.

Stories
The miller who locked the parson in
Thomas B. Clark, a licentiate who supplied Nottingham's preaching station every fourth Sabbath from 1811, rode past a flouring mill on a branch of Stillwater Creek on his way to services and was troubled that its owner, a Mr. Logan, ran the mill on Sundays. One Sunday morning, seeing the mill in motion as the hour of worship approached, Clark dismounted, tied his horse, and went in to remonstrate. Logan slipped out the back, locked both doors behind him, and held the minister prisoner, 'making a prisoner of the parson,' as he put it, until the preaching hour had passed. Clark used the time to reason with his captor about his duty to God and the community, and Logan later became his friend, changed his habits and made a profession of religion under his ministry.
A tavern at the fork of the great road
The great western road from Pittsburgh by way of Steubenville, and from central Pennsylvania by way of Charleston (now Wellsburg), joined in this county, which led to the founding of Cadiz, and ran on west nine or ten miles to fork on the land of William Ingles; it passed within about three-quarters of a mile of the site of Nottingham Church. One branch ran through the White Eye plains toward Fort Defiance and the Sandusky country, the other by Zanesville into the Scioto and Miami valleys. Ingles, living at the junction, found he had to keep a public house for the unexpected rush of emigrants, and in the spring of 1802 he put up a large double log cabin, thought to be the first hotel ever kept in the bounds of Harrison County. Part of the old tavern was still standing in 1900 less than a mile north of the church, in a lonely spot 'deserted both by residents and roads.'
