How Short Creek Township, Harrison County began

Short Creek Township, in the southeastern corner of Harrison County, was among the earliest-settled parts of the county: explorers camped on the headwaters of Short Creek in 1787, and veterans who had served the United States as Indian scouts received land grants there in payment, with at least one settler bringing his family in the spring of 1796. The village of Harrisville lies within the township, along with the unincorporated hamlet of Georgetown, platted in 1814 by George Riggle.

Settled 1796 (first settler families); a few earlier arrivals in the 1790s.

Where the name comes from

The township is named for Short Creek, the stream draining it.

Before the town

No Native village, mound, or treaty boundary specific to this township is documented in the sources consulted. The record of the 1790s is of frontier conflict: the surveyor John Mathews, camping on Short Creek's headwaters in September 1787 while digging ginseng, wrote that Native fighters had killed ginseng parties on Cross Creek that same month; Jacob Holmes, who moved his family here in 1796, had served as a US scout; and a family letter published by Hanna says William Huff shot a Native man near the site of Georgetown about 1800 after the man boasted of scalping white settlers. The land was in the cessions of the Treaty of Fort McIntosh (1785) and Treaty of Greenville (1795); the Native peoples in range were the Mingo, Lenape (Delaware) and Shawnee.

Nations recorded here: Mingo (Seneca-Cayuga), Delaware (Lenape), Shawnee.

Timeline

  1. — Early explorers camp on the headwaters of Short Creek.
  2. — A settler who had served as a United States Indian scout brings his family to Short Creek in the spring, part of a wave of scouts paid with land grants there.
  3. — Jacob Holmes, who had served three years as a US Indian scout, moves his family to land granted for that service on Short Creek, and Joseph Huff's house near the site of Georgetown becomes the frontier house of the neighbourhood.
  4. — In April, Daniel Peterson lives at the fork of Short Creek as the only family then within the present limits of Harrison County, according to Henry Howe's 1847 account quoted by Hanna.
  5. — About this year William Huff shoots a Native man near the site of Georgetown who had boasted of white scalps, as told in a letter by a Huff relative quoted by Hanna.
  6. — George Riggle plats the hamlet of Georgetown within the township, naming it for himself.
  7. — Harrisville is platted within the township by John Wells, Thomas Gray, Store Hutchinson, and Robert Dutton on October 19, filed January 9, 1815.
  8. — Georgetown is platted by George Riggle (spelled Riggie in Hanna's list), filed September 3.
  9. — Harrisville, in the township, has about 130 people, second only to Cadiz in the county.
  10. — John Hunt Morgan's raiders cross the south of Harrison County, through Moorefield and Harrisville, on their flight toward the Ohio River.
  11. — The census counts 1,712 people in the township.
  12. — The township has 1,608 people.
  13. — The township has 2,000 people.
  14. — The census counts 3,212, the township's largest, in a county history that lists more villages and hamlets here (Georgetown, Harrisville, Shortcreek, Robyville, Science Hill, Hurford, Hammond Cross Roads) than in any other township; the Shortcreek Coal Company works beside Georgetown.
  15. — The census counts 1,031 people in the township.

Stories

Land grants for Indian scouts

In the mid-1790s, in the aftermath of the Northwest Indian War, the United States government paid some of the men who had served as scouts against Native raiding parties with grants of land in what became Short Creek Township. At least one of these veteran scouts moved his family onto his grant in the spring of 1796, several years before Ohio statehood and nearly two decades before Harrison County itself was organized in 1813. The arrangement reflects how thoroughly the earliest American settlement of this part of the Ohio country was tied to the preceding years of conflict with Native nations north and west of the Ohio River, whose claim to the land had only just been extinguished by the Treaty of Greenville in 1795.

Ginseng diggers on Short Creek, 1787

In September 1787 John Mathews, a surveyor of the Seven Ranges, took part in a ginseng-digging trip into what is now Harrison County, and his diary is quoted in Hanna's county history. On September 20 he and Squire McMahan crossed the Ohio, and next day four more men joined them and they set off by Williamson's Trail. They camped half a mile beyond the Big Lick on the headwaters of Short Creek, in the ninth township of the fourth range, which Hanna places in the north half of the present Short Creek Township and the south half of Green. They dug along the ridge between Short Creek and the Stillwater for four days, where ginseng was so thick that practised men could dig forty to sixty pounds a day. Back at the river on September 29 they learned that three men had been killed and one taken by Native fighters about ten miles up Cross Creek, and Mathews wrote that they had been careless and had come across the trail of the same party. He added that he would give them liberty to take his scalp if they found him out after ginseng again that year.
