How Perry Township, Carroll County began

Perry Township, in southern Carroll County, was originally called North Township and was renamed Perry (probably for Oliver Hazard Perry) shortly after Carroll County's 1832-33 formation -- one of twenty-six Perry Townships across Ohio. Its only real community, Perrysville, was platted in 1835 and got its own post office in 1848; because Ohio already had a Perrysville in Ashland County, the Post Office Department renamed this one's post office Lamartine, and it operated under that name until 1954. No village here ever incorporated, and population, which peaked at 1,344 in 1840, has settled at about 934.

Where the name comes from

The township was first called North Township and was renamed Perry -- almost certainly for U.S. Navy Commodore Oliver Hazard Perry, hero of the 1813 Battle of Lake Erie, the namesake of the twenty-six other Perry Townships in Ohio -- shortly after Carroll County's formation; no source found gives the exact date or resolution.

Before the town

No Native American village, mound or trail site specific to Perry Township was found in the sources checked. The township's land lay within the area ceded by the Delaware (Lenape) and Wyandot under the 1785 Treaty of Fort McIntosh, opened to American settlement after the 1795 Treaty of Greenville. Nothing more specific to this township was located.

Timeline

  1. — At its first session, held at David J. Levy's house in Carrollton on March 4-5, the Carroll County commissioners create the township under the name North; in June they rename it Perry when a new arrangement of North and part of Union townships is petitioned.
  2. — Mahlon Stewart lays out Perrysville on January 28; it is nine miles south of Carrollton, with 200 people in 1880 and two churches.
  3. — George K. McCaskey plats the hamlet of Palermo, eight miles south of Carrollton; it has fifteen residents in 1880 and one store, tavern and blacksmith shop.
  4. — Township population peaked at 1,344 residents.
  5. — The county commissioners remit the tax on Joseph Crail's mill in Perry Township and strike it from the duplicate, ruling that the mill was not taxable property under the laws of the day.
  6. — A post office opens at Perrysville (the 1921 county history says the nearby office was named Lamartine, and that before it Jacob Gladden kept an office on his farm called Hickory, for Andrew Jackson, which was abolished once Lamartine opened).

Stories

One village, two names

When Perrysville was platted in Perry Township in 1835 and got its own post office in 1848, the Post Office Department had a problem: Ohio already had a Perrysville, in Ashland County, and mail addressed simply to 'Perrysville, Ohio' could not tell the two apart. Rather than rename the village itself, the department renamed only its post office, to Lamartine, and for the next century that was the name that appeared on envelopes and postmarks even though local people kept calling the place Perrysville. The Lamartine post office finally closed in 1954, as rural mail routes made small-village post offices unnecessary, but the township offices and maintenance garage still sit in the community today, still known locally simply as Perrysville.

A post office named for Andrew Jackson

Before Perrysville had a post office, Jacob Gladden Sr. kept one on his farm in what is now Perry Township and called it Hickory, after Andrew Jackson, who had many admirers in the township. The only paper that came through it, the 1921 county historian says, was the Cadiz Sentinel and the Carrollton Picayune. When the government established an office for Perrysville, which the village's founder Mahlon Stewart had laid out in January 1835, it was named Lamartine, and Hickory was closed by common consent. The same chapter notes that in the township's pioneer days stills stood here and there on farms; whisky was good ready money, the usual way of disposing of the rye and corn left after the stock had been fed, and there was no federal tax on liquor until the Civil War. After 1870, it adds, no still-house was known to exist in Carroll County.
