The history under the water: the valley before, the dam, the stories. All Ohio lakes

How Bowerston began

Bowerston grew from sawmill and gristmill sites on Conotton Creek that the brothers Barnhard and John Bower are said to have begun rebuilding in 1804. The settlement, first called Bower's Mills and then Bowersville, was platted as Bowerston in August 1851 or 1852 by David Bower, Henry Hoover and Nathaniel Bower, and became a village in 1881 or 1883. It lies in Monroe Township in northwestern Harrison County on the Pennsylvania and Wheeling & Lake Erie railroads, and had a flour mill, a safety-device factory and a coal drift in 1920. The 2020 census counted 356 people.

Settled 1804 (Bower brothers rebuild existing mills, per Wikipedia), platted August 21, 1851 (Wikipedia; filed 1852) or August 21, 1852 (1921 county history), incorporated April 2, 1883 (Wikipedia); 1881 (1921 county history), by David Bower, Henry Hoover, and Nathaniel Bower.

Where the name comes from

The village is named for the Bower family. Wikipedia says Barnhard and John Bower rebuilt the mills about which the settlement grew, and that it was called Bower's Mills, then Bowersville, and finally Bowerston; the 1921 county history says it was first platted as Bowersville, and a family biography there says the village was named in honor of the Bower family.

Estimated, not measured. No rain gauge has ever stood inside Bowerston, so every figure here is worked out from the gauges around it - the nearest ones weighted most. Treat them as close estimates rather than readings.

48,742 days of records, 1893-01-01 to 2026-10-30. Source: NOAA NCEI GHCN-Daily, 3,240 gauges in and around Ohio. A day is "gauged" when a gauge standing inside the boundary reported it, and the value is the mean of those gauges. Otherwise it is interpolated by inverse distance from every gauge reporting within 50 miles. Nothing is carried forward, back-filled or smoothed. Against NOAA nClimDiv county monthly precipitation over 136,848 complete county-months (checked 2026-11-01): correlation 0.9515, median absolute difference 0.217 in a month. Built 2026-11-01 from the Cracked Buckeye precipitation archive. Snow is the softer number — snowfall is measured by hand with a ruler, no agency publishes a gridded county snowfall series, and blowing snow defeats every observer.
