How Green Township, Harrison County began

Green Township lies in the eastern part of Harrison County and contains the village of Hopedale in its northeast and the unincorporated hamlet of Pittsburgh Junction to the west. Its southern half was, before the county's 1813 organization, part of the same district where early explorers camped on the headwaters of Short Creek in 1787. Beech Spring Church, organized in the fall of 1803 on land donated by settler Daniel Welch and named for a natural spring ringed by beech trees on his farm, was the first Presbyterian congregation built in what is now Harrison County and the parent of at least six daughter congregations, including Ridge Church in Archer Township. The township's earliest documented settlers arrived by 1801. It remains rural, its population concentrated in Hopedale.

Settled by 1801 (settlement); 1787 (earliest recorded exploration).

Where the name comes from

No specific origin for the name "Green" is recorded in the sources consulted; Green is a common township name across Ohio, sometimes honoring Revolutionary War general Nathanael Greene.

Before the town

No Native American village, mound, or treaty boundary specific to this place is documented in the sources consulted; the land was included in the general Ohio cessions of the 1780s-1790s (Treaty of Fort McIntosh, 1785, and Treaty of Greenville, 1795) before organized American settlement began, and it lay within range of Mingo, Delaware (Lenape), and Shawnee hunting and travel along the Ohio River tributaries.

Nations recorded here: Mingo (Seneca-Cayuga), Delaware (Lenape), Shawnee.

Timeline

  1. — A party of surveyors' assistants gathering ginseng camps on the headwaters of Short Creek, in the ninth township of the fourth range -- territory later divided between Green and Short Creek Townships -- near a spring later known as the "Big Lick."
  2. — Anthony Bricker and William Hogg (the latter from Fayette County, Pennsylvania) settle in Green Township, among the earliest documented settlers named in the county's 1900 history; John Craig follows in 1803 from Donegal Township, Washington County, Pa.
  3. — Beech Spring Church is organized in the fall by Revs. Joseph Patterson and Elisha Macurdy, on land at the southwest corner of section one donated by settler Daniel Welch; Welch names the site Beech Spring for a large natural spring ringed by beech trees on his land, and it becomes the first Presbyterian church built within what is now Harrison County. Around the same period, Welch also operates a horse-mill in the vicinity, which later county-history retellings sometimes conflate with the naming of the church itself.
  4. — Rev. John Rea, an Irish-born graduate of Jefferson College licensed to preach the year before, is ordained and installed as pastor of the united congregations of Crabapple and Beech Spring on August 22; the united charge already numbers 131 communicants within eight months.
  5. — Green Township is organized while Harrison is still part of Jefferson County; it takes its present boundary in 1833.
  6. — The union between Crabapple and Beech Spring is dissolved by mutual consent, and Rev. Rea devotes his full time to Beech Spring, where his pastorate continues until 1848 -- a total of forty-three years.
  7. — The village of Hopedale is platted by Cyrus McNeely in the township's northeast, about two miles northwest of the Beech Spring graveyard.
  8. — A post office is established at Hopedale.
  9. — The census counts 1,650 people in the township.
  10. — The township has 1,468 people.
  11. — The township has 1,618 people, as coal mining grows around Unionvale and Hopedale.
  12. — The township has 2,008 people, with four railroads (Wabash, Lake Erie & Western, Wheeling & Lake Erie and the Pennsylvania system) and steam-shovel strip mines near Hopedale.
  13. — The census counts 1,719 people in the township; Utica Shale oil and gas wells operate south of Hopedale.

Stories

The township of four railroads and a coal seam

Green Township, five by seven miles on the Jefferson County line, was in 1920 the best supplied with railroads of any part of Harrison County, with the Wabash, the Lake Erie & Western, the Wheeling & Lake Erie and the Pennsylvania system all crossing it. Under it lay the Pittsburgh No. 8 coal seam, which miners had worked from drift mouths for years at Unionvale, where Austrians and other immigrants lived as coal miners, and at Hopedale. About 1920 dozens of steam shovels began stripping the soil off the seam near Hopedale and shipping coal in large amounts. The township population had been 1,468 in 1900 and 1,618 in 1910, and the 1920 census counted 2,008. The county historian, writing in 1921, worried that the stripping destroyed fertile farms and that the generation doing it was not looking to the next.
