How Stock Township, Harrison County began

Stock Township, in the north-central part of Harrison County, is four and a half miles by six and was organized on June 5, 1815. Settlement began in 1809 with George Venamon (written Yenamon in some transcriptions) from Washington County, Pennsylvania, and Michael Conaway, John Simpson, James Hoagland and Alexander Moore followed. The township has never had a village or a railroad; its one hamlet, Laceyville, grew around a store and post office (1850 to 1907). It is cited by Lewis's 1921 county history as among the finest townships for surface in the county, noted for sheep and poultry. Its population fell from 714 in 1890 to 439 in 1920 as families moved west, and was 439 again in 2020.

Where the name comes from

No source consulted explains the name Stock; there is one other Stock Township in Ohio, in Noble County.

Before the town

No Native village, mound, burial or battle site is recorded for Stock Township in the sources consulted (Hanna's 1900 county history, Lewis's 1921 county history, the township and village chapters). What the record does show is regional. The 1785 Treaty of Fort McIntosh, signed with the Wyandot, Delaware (Lenape), Ojibwe and Odawa, claimed most of eastern and southern Ohio for the United States, though many Native leaders rejected it, and the 1795 Treaty of Greenville confirmed the cession after Fallen Timbers. Hanna notes that the first routes into Harrison County were probably old Indian trails along streams and ridge tops, and cites Archer Butler Hulbert's 1900 study of Ohio's Indian thoroughfares, which traced a 'Mingo Trail' from the Mingo Bottoms (Steubenville) to Will's Town (Duncan Falls) crossing the county a short distance south of Cadiz. The first settlers to reach Short Creek in 1796 included former government Indian scouts paid in land, and Hanna describes the county's earliest white visitors as Indian fighters, scouts and hunters from the Ohio River frontier.

Stories

A township that emptied westward

Lewis's 1921 history calls Stock 'among the finest townships, as to surface, in the county', with general farming and stock raising, and sheep and poultry in the lead. It had no village of importance and no railroad. Its hamlet, Laceyville, in the center of section 8, was not even a platted village, though it had a general store and a post office for many years and less than a hundred people in 1920. From 714 people in 1890 the township dropped to 591 in 1900, 489 in 1910 and 439 in 1920, as Lewis put it, because 'many families removed from this part of the State to other parts and on to the great West beyond the Mississippi where cheaper lands might be obtained.' Hanna's lists show later settlers who came to it from Ulster: John Sampson from County Tyrone in 1827 and Joseph Walker from County Derry in 1822.
