How Darke County began

Darke County was formed from Miami County on January 3, 1809, and named for General William Darke, a Revolutionary War officer who commanded a regiment at St. Clair's Defeat nearby in 1791. Its history begins earlier and more dramatically than its founding date: Fort Jefferson (1791) and Fort Greene Ville (1793), built during the Northwest Indian War, made the county's soil the setting for the Treaty of Greenville, signed August 3, 1795, which ceded most of Ohio to the United States and gave Greenville, the county seat, its name and its enduring nickname, the Treaty City. A decade later, Tecumseh and his brother Tenskwatawa built a protest settlement on the same ground before removing to Indiana in 1808. Organized as a functioning county government in 1817, Darke County filled with German and other settlers through the 19th century and today is a farm county anchored by Greenville, birthplace of sharpshooter Annie Oakley.

Greenville has been the county seat since the county's creation, laid out on the site of the abandoned Fort Greene Ville after the fort was decommissioned; the present Darke County Courthouse, Sheriff's House, and Jail in Greenville was built in the 1870s and listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1976.
