How North Star began
North Star was laid out in 1852 in Wabash Township, northern Darke County, one-fourth mile west of the township's center along the road connecting Greenville and Celina. William Edwards opened the first store the year it was platted, and John and David Trissell built a sawmill the same year, later expanded into a gristmill; by 1880 the village of about 150 people supported a blacksmith, a store, and a church begun in 1876. St. Louis Catholic Church, built in 1914, is the village's National Register-listed landmark.
Platted 1852, by lots first sold by H. Puterbaugh, D. H. T. Sullow, and S. J. Houston.
Where the name comes from
Named for its location on the edge of the Great Black Swamp, as the northernmost point in Darke County that was not wetland; the 1880 county history does not discuss the name directly.
Before the town
No Native American village or site specific to present-day North Star is documented in the sources checked. The village sits in Wabash Township in northern Darke County, on the edge of the historic Great Black Swamp, part of the broader Miami and Shawnee homeland ceded under the 1795 Treaty of Greenville.
Nations recorded here: Shawnee, Miami.

Stories
Named for standing on dry ground
North Star's name is a piece of practical 19th-century geography rather than any grander symbolism: the village sat at the northernmost edge of Darke County where the land stayed dry, right at the border of the vast Great Black Swamp that once covered much of northwestern Ohio. Laid out in 1852 along the road linking the county seat at Greenville with Celina to the north, the village grew as a stopping point on solid ground -- a small distinction that mattered enormously to travelers and settlers picking their way around a swamp that would not be substantially drained until decades later.
A mill, a store, and three men selling lots
North Star's 1880 origin story reads like a template for small Ohio crossroads villages: no single founder, but three neighboring landowners -- H. Puterbaugh, D. H. T. Sullow and S. J. Houston -- each selling off lots from their own sections the year the village was platted. William Edwards put in the first stock of goods that same year, 1852, in a store building that changed hands repeatedly over the following decades; John and David Trissell built a sawmill nearby, later expanded with gristmill works by Stephen J. Houston in 1858. By 1880 the arrangement had produced a functioning village of about 150 people, still centered on the same mill and the same general-store lot two owners later.

A day is "gauged" when a gauge standing inside the boundary reported it, and the value is the mean of those gauges. Otherwise it is interpolated by inverse distance from every gauge reporting within 50 miles. Nothing is carried forward, back-filled or smoothed. Against NOAA nClimDiv county monthly precipitation over 136,848 complete county-months (checked 2026-10-31): correlation 0.9515, median absolute difference 0.217 in a month. Built 2026-10-31 from the Cracked Buckeye precipitation archive. Snow is the softer number — snowfall is measured by hand with a ruler, no agency publishes a gridded county snowfall series, and blowing snow defeats every observer.
