How Gordon began
Gordon was platted in 1849 in Twin Township, southern Darke County, and named for one of the pioneers, whose full name neither the 1880 nor the 1914 county history gives. It grew up on the Dayton and Union Railroad as a farm-trade village with a sawmill, grain dealers, a lumber business and tobacco warehouses, and by 1914 had Baptist and Methodist Episcopal churches and 181 residents. Its population peaked at 265 in 1960 and was 245 in 2020, in a village of under a fifth of a square mile.
Platted 1849.
Where the name comes from
Named for one of the pioneers of the neighborhood; the 1914 county history says the place was platted in 1849 and 'named for one of the pioneers' but does not name him. A Joseph Gordon and a Dr. J. P. Gordon appear elsewhere in the 1880 book, but nothing ties either to this village, so no individual is claimed.
Before the town
No Native American village, mound or trail specific to Gordon is recorded in the sources checked. The village lies in Twin Township, south of the Greenville treaty line, in country the Treaty of Greenville (1795) opened to settlement; the county as a whole has a Miami, Shawnee and Lenape history.
Nations recorded here: Miami, Shawnee.

Stories
A town the railroad arranged
Ithaca, a short way off, was platted in 1832 and was the trading centre of the district, on an old highway in the middle of the earliest settlement. Gordon was laid out in 1849, and what shifted the balance was the railroad. The Greenville and Miami line, later the Dayton and Union, was surveyed across the swampy plain in the late 1840s and ran past Gordon and Arcanum rather than Ithaca. The 1914 county history says plainly that Ithaca's growth was 'retarded in recent years' by the building of the Dayton and Union to the east and the location of Gordon and Arcanum on that line. The 1880 history adds the human side: once the road was finished, a young merchant from Monroe Township set up at Gordon as its first grain buyer and among its first storekeepers, before selling out and going back to Ithaca to buy the mill. By 1914 Gordon had a lumber business, an elevator and tobacco warehouses on the same rails.

48,162 days of records, 1893-06-01 to 2026-10-29. Source: NOAA NCEI GHCN-Daily, 3,240 gauges in and around Ohio. A day is "gauged" when a gauge standing inside the boundary reported it, and the value is the mean of those gauges. Otherwise it is interpolated by inverse distance from every gauge reporting within 50 miles. Nothing is carried forward, back-filled or smoothed. Against NOAA nClimDiv county monthly precipitation over 136,848 complete county-months (checked 2026-10-31): correlation 0.9515, median absolute difference 0.217 in a month. Built 2026-10-31 from the Cracked Buckeye precipitation archive. Snow is the softer number — snowfall is measured by hand with a ruler, no agency publishes a gridded county snowfall series, and blowing snow defeats every observer.
