How Osgood began

Osgood, in Patterson Township in northeastern Darke County, was laid out in the 1880s at the quartering of Sections 1, 6, 12 and 7, along the Cincinnati, Hamilton and Dayton Railway (the 'Narrow Gauge'), built through the township about 1881. Its early population was largely Protestant until St. Nicholas Catholic parish organized in 1906 to serve settlers of French and German descent; the brick church was dedicated September 6, 1908 and is on the National Register of Historic Places. The 1890 census counted 242 residents, and 306 lived there in 2020.

Where the name comes from

Name origin not recorded in the sources checked. The 1914 county history says only that the village was laid out 'in the eighties' and does not explain the name; the 1880 history predates the village and names no place called Osgood.

Before the town

No Native American village, mound or trail specific to Osgood is recorded in the sources checked. Patterson Township, in the northeastern corner of Darke County, was set off in 1841 from Wayne Township, which then extended north to the old Greenville treaty line; the land south of that line was ceded by the Treaty of Greenville (1795). The 1914 history notes that a man called Kill Buck, described as a half-breed or chief, had a cabin near Bald Hill in neighboring Wayne Township in the early 1800s.

Nations recorded here: Miami, Shawnee.

Stories

A Catholic parish built by a small, devoted flock

When St. Nicholas parish organized in Osgood in 1906, it began small: about thirty-five families gathering under Rev. John Rahrle, meeting at first in the village schoolhouse while a temporary church went up that September. The area's settlers had been mostly Protestant, which is why the parish came so much later than the Catholic communities at Minster and Fort Loramie. Within two years the congregation raised some $22,000 for a permanent brick church in Gothic Revival style, with an octagonal steeple topped by a gilded cross, dedicated on September 6, 1908. The 1914 county history calls it a fitting memorial to the zeal of Father Rahrle and his small flock. By then the parish had grown to about 85 families, and in 1979 the church and rectory were placed on the National Register as part of the state's cross-tipped churches group.

A village the narrow gauge made

Patterson Township was late to fill: the 1914 history calls it 'late in settlement and backward in development,' with 319 people in 1850 and 1,632 by 1910. Its pioneers, Isaac Finkbone and Philip Pitzenberger among them, cleared beech, sugar maple and oak on a light clay soil, and the first village, Woodland, was not laid out until 1859. What changed the township was the Cincinnati, Hamilton and Dayton's narrow-gauge line, built about 1881 along a section line from the Mercer County border. Within a few years two villages stood beside it, Osgood and Yorkshire a mile south. By 1914 Osgood had a hotel, station, elevators, lodges and two churches.

A day is "gauged" when a gauge standing inside the boundary reported it, and the value is the mean of those gauges. Otherwise it is interpolated by inverse distance from every gauge reporting within 50 miles. Nothing is carried forward, back-filled or smoothed. Against NOAA nClimDiv county monthly precipitation over 136,848 complete county-months (checked 2026-10-31): correlation 0.9515, median absolute difference 0.217 in a month. Snow is the softer number — snowfall is measured by hand with a ruler, no agency publishes a gridded county snowfall series, and blowing snow defeats every observer.
