How Greenville began

Greenville grew on the site of Fort Greene Ville, Anthony Wayne's 55-acre 1793 stockade, where the Treaty of Greenville was signed on August 3, 1795, ending the Northwest Indian War. Settlers began arriving in 1807, and the town was platted in 1808 on the abandoned fort site; it became the seat of Darke County when the county was created the following year. Sharpshooter Annie Oakley, who grew up nearby and sold game to Greenville shopkeepers as a girl, died in the city in 1926 and is memorialized at the Garst Museum and a downtown plaza; Greenville still calls itself the Treaty City.

Settled 1807, platted 1808, incorporated 1838 (village); later city), by settlers on the abandoned Fort Greene Ville site.

Where the name comes from

Named for Fort Greene Ville, itself named by General Anthony Wayne for his Revolutionary War comrade Nathanael Greene.

Before the town

Greenville sits directly on the site of Fort Greene Ville, Anthony Wayne's 1793 stockade where the Treaty of Greenville was signed August 3, 1795 by the United States and twelve Native nations, ceding most of present-day Ohio and ending the Northwest Indian War. A decade later, Shawnee leader Tenskwatawa (the Prophet) and his brother Tecumseh built a protest settlement at the confluence of Mud Creek and Greenville Creek, within the present city, occupying it from 1805 until pressure from Indiana territorial governor William Henry Harrison forced their removal to Prophetstown, Indiana in 1808. Tenskwatawa passed back through in 1826 with a Shawnee removal party. The surrounding area's history also includes Fort Jefferson.

Nations recorded here: Shawnee, Wyandot, Lenape (Delaware), Miami, Ottawa.

Stories

The Treaty City

Greenville's whole identity traces to a single summer. In 1793 Anthony Wayne's army built Fort Greene Ville, a stockade covering roughly 55 acres -- reputedly the largest wooden fort ever raised in North America -- to shelter about 3,000 soldiers through the winter before their march north to victory at Fallen Timbers. Less than a year later, in August 1795, more than a thousand representatives of a dozen Native nations returned to the same fort and signed the Treaty of Greenville with Wayne, ending years of war and ceding most of Ohio to the United States. When the army left, the fort's cleared, defensible ground became the obvious place to build a town, platted in 1808 and made the seat of the new Darke County the next year. The name stuck, and so did the memory: Greenville still markets itself as the Treaty City, and the Garst Museum downtown holds artifacts from Wayne's campaign and the treaty council alongside its larger collection on native daughter Annie Oakley.

A girl who sold game on these streets became Little Sure Shot

Phoebe Ann Mosey was born in a log cabin northwest of Greenville in 1860, the sixth of eight children in a family left poor after her father's early death. As a girl she trapped and shot game -- quail, rabbit, squirrel -- and sold it to shopkeepers and hotels in Greenville to help support her mother and siblings, becoming skilled enough with a rifle that local legend credits the practice with paying off the family farm's mortgage. She left the county as a young woman to join, and soon headline, Buffalo Bill's Wild West show as Annie Oakley, touring the world as one of the most famous sharpshooters in American history. She returned to Darke County in old age and died in Greenville in November 1926; her husband and shooting partner Frank Butler died eighteen days later, and the two are buried side by side at Brock Cemetery outside the city. The Garst Museum's National Annie Oakley Center now holds one of the largest collections of her memorabilia anywhere, and a statue of her stands on a downtown plaza that bears her name.

Mostly estimated. Only 5% of these days come from a gauge standing inside Greenville - the rest are worked out from the nearest gauges around it, so read them as close estimates rather than readings.

48,426 days of records, 1893-01-01 to 2026-10-29. Source: NOAA NCEI GHCN-Daily, 3,240 gauges in and around Ohio. A day is "gauged" when a gauge standing inside the boundary reported it, and the value is the mean of those gauges. Otherwise it is interpolated by inverse distance from every gauge reporting within 50 miles. Nothing is carried forward, back-filled or smoothed. Against NOAA nClimDiv county monthly precipitation over 136,848 complete county-months (checked 2026-10-31): correlation 0.9515, median absolute difference 0.217 in a month. Built 2026-10-31 from the Cracked Buckeye precipitation archive. Snow is the softer number — snowfall is measured by hand with a ruler, no agency publishes a gridded county snowfall series, and blowing snow defeats every observer.

Facilities are placed on the map from Ohio EPA's own map layers, EPA's Facility Registry, coordinates written in the filings, or a geocoded street address. A permit filed under a private person's name (most are household septic systems) is counted but never named, placed or linked; licenses for individual workers and open-burning notices are left out entirely.
