How Rossburg began
Rossburg, first called Rossville, was laid out in 1868 by John G. Ross from part of an eighty-acre farm in Allen Township, at the corner of sections 26, 27, 34 and 35, with lots added by Robert Ross. A blacksmith shop, a store kept by Solomon Frank and a post office formed the beginning, and the village grew little until the Cincinnati, Jackson and Mackinaw railway came about 1883. By 1914 it had a bank, hotel, town hall, mill and elevator, and United Brethren and Methodist churches; its population was 295 in 1960 and 159 in 2020.
Platted 1868, by John G. Ross.
Where the name comes from
Named for its founder John G. Ross, who laid out the village in 1868 as Rossville (the 1880 county history already calls it Rossville); the 1914 history says 'Rossburg (formerly Rossville)'. Wikipedia says the post office was named Hagerman from 1883 to 1905.
Before the town

Stories
A village with more than one name
John G. Ross laid out the village in 1868 as Rossville, from part of an eighty-acre farm at the corner of four sections in Allen Township, and the 1880 county history uses that name. Two years earlier a blacksmith named John Clapper had built a shop on the spot, where farmers could mend tools and have their horses shod; a store and a post office followed in the year of the plat. When the Cincinnati, Jackson and Mackinaw railway came through about 1883 the 'Mackinaw' brought a bank, hotel, mill and elevator, and the 1914 county history calls the place Rossburg, 'formerly Rossville'. Wikipedia adds that the village post office opened in December 1883 under a third name, Hagerman, and closed in November 1905.

48,263 days of records, 1893-01-01 to 2026-10-29. Source: NOAA NCEI GHCN-Daily, 3,240 gauges in and around Ohio. A day is "gauged" when a gauge standing inside the boundary reported it, and the value is the mean of those gauges. Otherwise it is interpolated by inverse distance from every gauge reporting within 50 miles. Nothing is carried forward, back-filled or smoothed. Against NOAA nClimDiv county monthly precipitation over 136,848 complete county-months (checked 2026-10-31): correlation 0.9515, median absolute difference 0.217 in a month. Built 2026-10-31 from the Cracked Buckeye precipitation archive. Snow is the softer number — snowfall is measured by hand with a ruler, no agency publishes a gridded county snowfall series, and blowing snow defeats every observer.
