How Ansonia began
Ansonia was laid out as Dallas in 1845 in Brown Township, northern Darke County (not Greenville Township, as sometimes stated), one mile west of the township's eastern boundary, and incorporated in 1867. The name changed by way of the post office: when Dallas got a post office in 1872, it was registered as Ansonia, and the railroad station, the Methodist charge (1875) and eventually the village itself followed the postal name. By 1880 the town shipped 600-700 railcars of freight a year and supported a stave-and-hub works, a grist and sawmill, a three-story brick school, two hotels, two fraternal lodges and a thirteen-piece town band.
Platted 1845 (as Dallas), incorporated 1867 (as Dallas).
Where the name comes from
Platted and incorporated as Dallas; when a post office was established in the village in 1872 it was registered under the name Ansonia instead, and the railroad station carried the same name. The Methodist Episcopal charge changed its name to Ansonia in 1875 to match 'the name of the railroad and the post office,' and the village name eventually followed. Why 'Ansonia' specifically was chosen for the post office is not stated in the sources checked.
Before the town
No Native American village or site specific to present-day Ansonia is documented in the sources checked. The village sits in Brown Township, northern Darke County, part of the broader Miami and Shawnee homeland ceded under the 1795 Treaty of Greenville, more than five decades before the town was platted.
Nations recorded here: Shawnee, Miami.

Stories
A name that arrived through the mail
The village platted as Dallas in 1845 never formally changed its name by any vote recorded in the 1880 county history; instead, the name simply migrated in through the post office. When Dallas got its first post office in 1872, the postal service registered it as Ansonia, and the adjoining railroad station took the same name. From there the new name spread by attachment: the Methodist Episcopal charge, which had already been renamed twice before (from Wabash to Versailles to Dallas), switched to Ansonia in 1875 specifically to match 'the name of the railroad and the post office,' in the words of the pastor who recorded the charge's history. The village itself eventually followed the same drift, and the place still platted as Dallas in the county's old records is known today, and was already known locally by 1880, as Ansonia.
A stave works that ran through three owners in seven years
The Ansonia Stave Company, working out of Baughman's Addition in the southwest part of the village, turned the surrounding hardwood into finished cooperage on an industrial scale: by 1880 it was producing about 247,000 hubs of assorted sizes and 500,000 barrel staves a year, plus forty finished flour barrels a day out of its own cooper shop, on roughly a dozen employees and $25,000 to $28,000 in annual business. It began small in 1873 under Robison & Rigdon, who sold out in 1876 to Roush, Leare & Co.; that firm sold again in the spring of 1877 to brothers J. H., C. A. and W. A. Roush, and in the spring of 1880 W. A. Roush sold his own share to his remaining partners -- three ownership changes in the company's first seven years, a pace not unusual for the small rail-town manufactories that sprang up across Darke County in the 1870s.

48,290 days of records, 1893-01-01 to 2026-10-29. Source: NOAA NCEI GHCN-Daily, 3,240 gauges in and around Ohio. A day is "gauged" when a gauge standing inside the boundary reported it, and the value is the mean of those gauges. Otherwise it is interpolated by inverse distance from every gauge reporting within 50 miles. Nothing is carried forward, back-filled or smoothed. Against NOAA nClimDiv county monthly precipitation over 136,848 complete county-months (checked 2026-10-31): correlation 0.9515, median absolute difference 0.217 in a month. Built 2026-10-31 from the Cracked Buckeye precipitation archive. Snow is the softer number — snowfall is measured by hand with a ruler, no agency publishes a gridded county snowfall series, and blowing snow defeats every observer.
