How Versailles began
Versailles was laid out in 1819 by Silas Atchison as Jacksonville, on a glacial knoll above Indian Creek in Wayne Township, where four early roads met. A second settlement north of the creek was called Georgetown, later North Jacksonville; the two were united and renamed Versailles after French settlers arrived in the 1830s, and the village was incorporated in 1855. The Bee Line railroad came through in 1853, and a fire on July 6, 1901 destroyed fifty-one business houses and twenty-nine dwellings, after which the center was rebuilt in brick. The village had 2,692 residents in 2020, and the Versailles Town Hall and Wayne Township House is on the National Register.
Settled 1815 (David Ward settled on Swamp Creek in what became Wayne Township), platted 1819 (as Jacksonville), incorporated 1855, by Silas Atchison.
Where the name comes from
Laid out in 1819 as Jacksonville, for Andrew Jackson, according to Wikipedia. The 1914 county history says the part north of the creek was called Georgetown, later North Jacksonville, and that 'the coming of large numbers of French settlers about 1833 caused the two towns to be incorporated under the name of Versailles, in honor of the old French capital'; Wikipedia gives 1837 for the renaming.
Before the town
No Native village, trail or mound in Versailles itself is recorded. The county histories place the Indian Killbuck's cabin at Bald Hill to the south, near Webster, and the trapper Conner on a knoll beside Swamp Creek near the site of Versailles, in the years around the War of 1812; see the Wayne Township file. The land was ceded by the Treaty of Greenville (1795).
Nations recorded here: Shawnee, Miami.

Stories
From Jacksonville to Versailles
Versailles was founded in 1819 as Jacksonville, named for Andrew Jackson and his victory at the Battle of New Orleans. Wikipedia says the name Versailles was adopted in 1837 (a statement tagged citation needed) and that the change was suggested by the French descent of many early residents; the 1914 county history dates the arrival of large numbers of French settlers to about 1833. In 2010, 33.8 percent of residents claimed French ancestry.
The fire of July 6, 1901
On July 6, 1901 a fire started in Sheffel's old idle mill at the west end of Main Street and burned eastward through six blocks, leaving only two business rooms standing on the north side and taking two blocks of buildings on the south. Fifty-one business houses and twenty-nine of the best dwellings in town were consumed, a loss put at about $450,000 against roughly $220,000 of insurance. The county historian says the fire started mysteriously. The townspeople rebuilt at once, and more substantially, so that by 1914 Versailles was counted one of the best-built towns in the county, with overall factories, a produce house, a tobacco warehouse and several lumber yards.

A day is "gauged" when a gauge standing inside the boundary reported it, and the value is the mean of those gauges. Otherwise it is interpolated by inverse distance from every gauge reporting within 50 miles. Nothing is carried forward, back-filled or smoothed. Against NOAA nClimDiv county monthly precipitation over 136,848 complete county-months (checked 2026-10-31): correlation 0.9515, median absolute difference 0.217 in a month. Built 2026-10-31 from the Cracked Buckeye precipitation archive. Snow is the softer number — snowfall is measured by hand with a ruler, no agency publishes a gridded county snowfall series, and blowing snow defeats every observer.
