How Portage County began

Portage County was created by an act of February 10, 1807, effective June 7, 1807, from Trumbull County, and organized on June 8, 1808, taking its name from the Portage Path, the eight-mile carrying place between the Cuyahoga and Tuscarawas rivers that now lies just west of the county in Summit County. It lies in the Connecticut Western Reserve, opened by the Treaty of Greenville in 1795; Seneca, Ottawa, Cayuga, Onondaga and Oneida families still hunted and camped here when Abraham Honey (Mantua, 1798), Benjamin Tappan (Ravenna, 1799) and Ebenezer Sheldon (Aurora, 1799) arrived, and the Great Trail from Fort McIntosh to Sandusky crossed the county by way of Standing Rock on the Cuyahoga. The county first reached west over most of what is now Summit County and took its present shape in 1840, when Summit was formed; the Pennsylvania and Ohio Canal (1840), the Cleveland and Pittsburgh Railroad (1851) and the Atlantic and Great Western Railroad (1863) then carried its cheese, maple sugar, glass, clay and coal to market and turned Franklin Mills into the railroad town of Kent. The 20th century brought Kent State Normal School (1910), Goodyear's Wingfoot Lake airship base (1917), the Ravenna Arsenal (1940) and, on May 4, 1970, the Kent State shootings. Today Ravenna is the seat and Kent the largest city, with Aurora, Streetsboro, Hiram, Garrettsville and Mantua among the towns of a county of about 162,000 people between Akron, Cleveland and Youngstown.

Ravenna, platted by Benjamin Tappan in 1808 and named county seat the same year; a log courthouse and jail were built in 1810, a brick courthouse in 1830 (enlarged 1881), and the present courthouse in the 1950s.
