How Ravenna began

Ravenna was founded in 1799 by Benjamin Tappan, whose new wife Nancy Wright Tappan, arriving in 1800, suggested naming the settlement for the city of Ravenna, Italy. Tappan platted the town in 1808 and it was chosen the same year as Portage County's seat of justice. Nineteenth-century Ravenna built an economy on glassworks (from 1848), carriage- and later hearse-making at the Clark/Riddle works, and by 1877 a milling operation that grew into the Quaker Oats Company, whose familiar logo was patented there in 1879; the city incorporated in 1853. Abraham Lincoln stopped and spoke there February 15, 1861, en route to his inauguration. Today, ZIP 44266, Ravenna remains the Portage County seat with 11,245 residents (2020).

Where the name comes from

Nancy Wright Tappan, who arrived in 1800 as the newly married wife of founder Benjamin Tappan, suggested naming the settlement after the city of Ravenna, Italy, rather than for a person or a Native place name as many neighboring Western Reserve towns were.

Before the town

No Native American village or site specific to the platted town of Ravenna itself is documented in the sources consulted; the nearest named site recorded in county histories, the Horace Y. Beebe House vicinity aside, lies out in Ravenna Township rather than the city center. The county history 'Portage Heritage' records the Standing Rock council site on the Cuyahoga River above Kent and Native villages elsewhere in the county, but nothing site-specific to Ravenna's own townsite. The county's broader Native history includes the Whittlesey culture, area treaties, and named village and camp locations elsewhere in the county.

Timeline

  1. — Benjamin Tappan arrives June 11 and settles the site that becomes Ravenna.
  2. — Ravenna's first mail route is established.
  3. — Tappan files the town plot and Ravenna is chosen as Portage County's seat of justice.
  4. — The Clark Carriage Company begins operation, later becoming the Riddle Manufacturing Company, which produces ornate hearses used at the funerals of Presidents McKinley and Harding.

Stories

A bride names the town

Benjamin Tappan had already been living at the site for months when his new wife, Nancy Wright Tappan, arrived from the East in 1800 to join him. Most Western Reserve towns took the name of a founder, a proprietor, or an old Native path — Ravenna instead took hers, or at least her idea: she is credited with suggesting the town be named for Ravenna, Italy, a choice with no obvious local connection at all. The name stuck through the town's selection as county seat in 1808 and through everything that followed — courthouse fires, a Lincoln visit, an oatmeal company, and more than two centuries as Portage County's seat of government.

Hearses for presidents

The Clark Carriage Company opened in Ravenna in 1831 building ordinary wagons and carriages, but the firm — reorganized over time into the Riddle Manufacturing Company — found its specialty in an unlikely niche: elaborately carved horse-drawn hearses. Riddle's funeral coaches earned enough of a national reputation that they were used at the funerals of two sitting presidents, William McKinley and Warren Harding, both of whom, coincidentally, were fellow Ohioans. The company's success helped anchor Ravenna's identity as a manufacturing town through the late 1800s, alongside the glassworks that had opened in 1848 and, later, the oat-milling and cast-iron toy industries that carried the city into the twentieth century.
