How Freedom Township, Portage County began
Freedom Township, formed from Town 4, Range 7 of the Connecticut Western Reserve, was settled in 1818 by Charles Paine — son of General Edward Paine, for whom Painesville, Ohio is named — who lived there for a time as a lone pioneer before the township, at first called North Rootstown, was formally organized in 1825, among the last in Portage County to be. Local tradition credits Paine's wife with choosing the new name for the idea of freedom itself. Orasumus Drake arrived in 1829 and founded the community of Drakesburg within the township. Freedom Station later served as a stop on the New York, Pennsylvania and Ohio Railroad. Today the roughly 24-square-mile township has 2,649 residents (2020).

Stories
A lone pioneer's township
Charles Paine came from Western Reserve aristocracy of a sort — his father, General Edward Paine, was prominent enough that the town of Painesville, Ohio carries the family name. But when Charles settled this particular township in 1818, he was, for a time, its only resident, a genuinely solitary pioneer in what was still called North Rootstown. The township took seven more years to organize formally, and when it finally did in 1825, among the last in Portage County to reach that milestone, it took a new name too: Freedom, chosen, local tradition says, at the suggestion of Paine's own wife, for the idea itself rather than for any person or hometown. It is a rare Western Reserve township name that commemorates an abstraction instead of a place or a proprietor.
