How Mantua began
Mantua grew from the township's first 1798 settlement into a railroad stop, Mantua Station, laid out in the 1840s on the Cleveland and Mahoning Valley Railroad on land originally owned by the Tappan family of Ravenna; it incorporated as a village in 1898. Like the township around it, its name honors Mantua, Italy, the fortress city Napoleon captured in early 1797 at the end of a months-long siege. The village center holds three National Register listings: the Horace L. Hine House, the William H. Crafts House (built 1882), and the Mantua Station Brick Commercial District. NFL Hall of Fame linebacker Jack Lambert was born and raised in Mantua. The village has 1,001 residents (2020).

A railroad depot named for a Napoleonic siege
Mantua's town center began, in the 1840s, as little more than a stop on the Cleveland and Mahoning Valley Railroad, built on land the Tappan family of Ravenna had owned, and known simply as Mantua Station. The name it carried — and still carries, in the Mantua Station Brick Commercial District's own name — traced back decades earlier to Napoleon Bonaparte's capture of Mantua, Italy, at the close of a grinding siege in early 1797. The railroad stop later grew into a village, which incorporated in 1898.
The potato and cheese shipping point
In 1885 Mantua Station was a flourishing little town of about 700 on the Cleveland & Mahoning Valley line, 'an exceedingly live village' by the county historian's account and a large shipping point for potatoes, cheese, onions, some cattle and sheep, and garden truck. One dealer alone handled about 50,000 bushels of potatoes in a season, another loaded an average of 300 calves a week on the cars the previous spring, and great quantities of pails and wooden ware went out as well. In cheese, Mantua stood as one of the leading points in the Reserve, with three large factories in the township, besides being the shipping point for the greater part of three other townships. The township, high and rolling, with a sandy-loam soil, was reckoned unsurpassed for fruit and dairying and for 'the finest potatoes in the world'. The village's present Potato Festival keeps that trade in memory.
