Life story

Carl Walz was born in Cleveland in 1955 and educated entirely in northeast Ohio: Charles F. Brush High School in Lyndhurst (1973), a summa cum laude physics degree from Kent State (1977) and a master's in solid-state physics from John Carroll University (1979). He joined the Air Force as a physicist analysing radioactive samples for the Atomic Energy Detection System, then became a flight test engineer on the F-16 at Edwards Air Force Base and flight test manager at Detachment 3 of the Air Force Flight Test Center. NASA selected him in January 1990. He flew on STS-51 (1993), with a seven-hour spacewalk, STS-65 (1994), then the longest shuttle flight, and STS-79 (1996) to Mir, and spent 196 days on the International Space Station as an Expedition 4 flight engineer in 2001-2002, setting a U.S. spaceflight endurance record with Dan Bursch. He was lead singer of Max Q, the astronaut rock band, and was inducted into the Ohio Veterans Hall of Fame. He retired from NASA in December 2008 and moved to Orbital Sciences, where he ran human spaceflight operations for its station cargo flights.

Stories

196 days on the station

Walz, Dan Bursch and the Russian commander Yury Onufrienko launched on Endeavour on 5 December 2001 and docked with the International Space Station two days later. In their stay as the Expedition 4 crew they tested station hardware, did maintenance and robotics work, ran experiments and moved a Soyuz from one docking port to another to make room for a new one. Walz spent six hours outside with Onufrienko in a Russian Orlan suit, outfitting the new Russian docking compartment, and 5 hours 52 minutes with Bursch in a U.S. suit, preparing the station for the S0 truss. When Endeavour landed at Edwards Air Force Base on 19 June 2002, the two Americans had been in space 196 days, a new U.S. record.

Lead singer of Max Q

Walz, who lists piano and vocal music among his interests, sang lead for Max Q, a rock band made up entirely of astronauts. Brewster Shaw and Robert 'Hoot' Gibson started the band in Houston in early 1987, recruiting George Nelson and Jim Wetherbee, to play the Mission Operations Directorate's 'Fajita Fest'. Over the years Max Q played NASA events, weddings and holiday parties, warmed up for Cheap Trick in Houston in 1994, the 25th anniversary of Apollo 11, and played live on Good Morning America in December 1995. Walz is listed among its former lead vocalists.

The physicist from John Carroll

All of Walz's schooling was in northeast Ohio. After Brush High School in Lyndhurst he took a physics degree summa cum laude at Kent State in 1977 and a master's in solid-state physics at John Carroll University in University Heights in 1979. The Air Force first used him as a physicist, analysing radioactive samples from the Atomic Energy Detection System, before sending him to test pilot school as a flight test engineer. Both universities later gave him alumni awards, Kent State in 1997 and John Carroll in 2002, and he was inducted into the Ohio Veterans Hall of Fame.
