How Suffield Township, Portage County began

Suffield Township's first European settlers, Royal Pease, his wife Deborah, and their two young children, arrived from Connecticut in June 1802, and the settlement was informally called Peasetown for years afterward. The township was formally organized and named Suffield on April 6, 1818, at the request of settlers who had come from Suffield, Connecticut, having been part of Trumbull County and Franklin Township before Portage County absorbed it in 1807. A post office ran from 1836 to 1966, and the southwestern settlement of Mishler kept its own post office from 1882 to 1917. In 2002, for the township's bicentennial, its Connecticut namesake sent an American Liberty elm as a gift. Today Suffield has 5,987 residents (2020).

Settled June 1802 (Royal and Deborah Pease and their children Delia and Albert), incorporated Organized and formally named April 6, 1818, by Royal Pease.

Where the name comes from

Stories

From Peasetown to Suffield

Royal and Deborah Pease brought their two small children into the township in June 1802, early enough that for years afterward the settlement carried their name informally: Peasetown. It took sixteen years, until April 6, 1818, for the growing community to organize formally and choose a permanent name — and when it did, the settlers chose not to keep honoring the Pease family but to reach back to their own shared origin, Suffield, Connecticut, where many of them had come from. The Connecticut connection outlasted the pioneers themselves by nearly two centuries: in 2002, marking the Ohio township's bicentennial, the original Suffield sent an American Liberty elm tree west as a gift, a living link between the two places sharing one name.
