How Streetsboro began

Streetsboro Township was purchased in 1798 by Titus Street, a Connecticut land speculator who never lived there himself; his agents Ralph Cowles and Lemuel Punderson surveyed the roughly 15,279-acre tract into 100-acre lots in the summer of 1822, and settlement followed. The township stayed a quiet farming community, with a small amusement destination at Shady Lake Park, until the Ohio Turnpike opened through it on October 1, 1955 and put it within easy reach of both Akron and Cleveland; population jumped from about 1,100 in 1950 to nearly 8,000 by 1970. The southern part of the township split off as the separate village of Sugar Bush Knolls in 1964, the remainder incorporated as a village in 1968, and Streetsboro became a city in 1971. Today, ZIP largely 44241, it is Portage County's second-largest city at 17,260 residents (2020).

Settled 1822 (survey and lot sale, following Titus Street's 1798 purchase), platted summer 1822, surveyed by Ralph Cowles and Lemuel Punderson into 100-acre lots, incorporated Village, 1968; city, 1971, by Titus Street (proprietor); Cowles and Punderson (survey).

Where the name comes from

The township and later city are named for Titus Street, the Connecticut land speculator who bought the roughly 25-square-mile tract in 1798, though Street himself never settled there; he did not open the land to buyers until his agents completed a survey in 1822.

Before the town

Streetsboro Township is the one place in Portage County where the 1957 county history 'Portage Heritage' specifically locates a Seneca village: in the township's southeastern corner, near the Cuyahoga River, under a leader the settlers called Big Son (Bigson). The same source lists Streetsboro Township among the county's townships with prehistoric mounds, village sites and burials recorded, though without giving an exact location for any of them, so those cannot be pinned to a specific spot within the modern city. In 1806 a son of Big Son, known to settlers as Mohawk, shot settler Daniel Diver in neighboring Deerfield Township in a dispute over a trade — Big Son's own band, based in Streetsboro, bore the consequences, arrested and marched to Warren before being cleared. The National Register listings that share Streetsboro's ZIP codes are not actually within the city: the Mantua Center District, Mantua Center School and Mantua Station Brick Commercial District sit in Mantua (ZIP 44255, a 1.6 percent sliver of which reaches Streetsboro residents), the Beebe House sits in Ravenna (ZIP 44266), and the Brown, Case-Barlow, Corbusier, Izant, Porter and Ward properties sit in Hudson, Summit County (ZIP 44236) — none of them Streetsboro sites.

Nations recorded here: Seneca.

Stories

A speculator's township, unsettled for a generation

Titus Street bought his 15,279-acre slice of the Connecticut Western Reserve in 1798, while the region was still recently opened by the Treaty of Greenville, but he never moved there and did not put the land up for sale for nearly a quarter century. Only after his agents Ralph Cowles and Lemuel Punderson finished surveying the tract into 100-acre lots in the summer of 1822 did settlers begin buying in. Street did contribute directly to the township's development once: when a turnpike connecting Cleveland to Wellsville was planned through the area in the mid-1820s, he agreed to donate the land needed to carry the road through his township, a route that became the basis for Ohio State Route 14. For more than a century afterward Streetsboro stayed what its late start had made it — a farming township with a small lakeside amusement spot at Shady Lake Park and little else to distinguish it.

The turnpike changes everything

Streetsboro's population held at roughly 1,100 people through 1950, essentially unchanged from its farming-township character of the 1800s. That changed on October 1, 1955, when the Ohio Turnpike opened directly through the township, putting it within an easy commute of both Akron and Cleveland for the first time. The population nearly tripled to about 6,800 by 1960 and reached almost 8,000 by 1970. Growth came fast enough, and unevenly enough, that the township's southern section broke off to incorporate on its own as Sugar Bush Knolls in 1964; the remaining township incorporated as a village in 1968, and by 1971, once the 1970 census confirmed the population had passed 5,000, it became a city.

Mostly estimated. Only 13% of these days come from a gauge standing inside Streetsboro - the rest are worked out from the nearest gauges around it, so read them as close estimates rather than readings.

48,875 days of records, 1893-01-01 to 2026-10-29. Source: NOAA NCEI GHCN-Daily, 3,240 gauges in and around Ohio. A day is "gauged" when a gauge standing inside the boundary reported it, and the value is the mean of those gauges. Otherwise it is interpolated by inverse distance from every gauge reporting within 50 miles. Nothing is carried forward, back-filled or smoothed. Against NOAA nClimDiv county monthly precipitation over 136,848 complete county-months (checked 2026-10-31): correlation 0.9515, median absolute difference 0.217 in a month. Built 2026-10-31 from the Cracked Buckeye precipitation archive. Snow is the softer number — snowfall is measured by hand with a ruler, no agency publishes a gridded county snowfall series, and blowing snow defeats every observer.

Facilities are placed on the map from Ohio EPA's own map layers, EPA's Facility Registry, coordinates written in the filings, or a geocoded street address. A permit filed under a private person's name (most are household septic systems) is counted but never named, placed or linked; licenses for individual workers and open-burning notices are left out entirely.
