How Mogadore began
Mogadore was founded in 1807 by Revolutionary War veteran Ariel Bradley and known as Bradleyville until 1825, when it took the name Mogadore after Mogador (modern Essaouira), Morocco, a name possibly inspired by the memoir of a Connecticut ship captain who had been captured and held there. The village straddles the Portage-Summit county line. Its population more than doubled from about 1,502 in 1930 to 3,851 by 1960 as Akron's suburbs expanded outward. It has 3,811 residents (2020) and functions as an Akron-area suburb.

The 1885 Portage County history says only that the name Mogadore 'is singular, and it is not known who suggested it', and that there is only one other Mogadore, in Africa. Wikipedia says the name likely comes from Essaouira, Morocco, formerly Mogador, and may have been inspired by the memoir Sufferings in Africa; the founder's name Bradley gave the settlement its earlier name, Bradleyville, until 1825.

Stories
A captive's memoir names a Reserve village
For nearly two decades after Revolutionary War veteran Ariel Bradley founded it in 1807, the settlement on the Portage-Summit county line carried the name of its founder: Bradleyville. Then in 1825 it took the name Mogadore, from Mogador, a port in Morocco now known as Essaouira. Wikipedia says the name likely comes from there and may have been inspired by 'Sufferings in Africa,' the memoir of a Connecticut ship captain who was captured and held prisoner in North Africa. The 1885 Portage County history says only that the name is singular, that it is not known who suggested it, and that there is only one other Mogadore, in Africa.
The nine-year-old who spied for Washington
Ariel Bradley, who settled the site of Mogadore in 1807, was born at Salisbury, Connecticut, in 1767. Perrin's 1881 history of Summit County prints General Bierce's sketch of his life: just before the Battle of White Plains in 1776, the sketch says, Bradley, only nine, was employed by General Washington to go into the British camp as a spy. He rode an old horse with a load of grain on its back, under pretense of going to mill, was arrested as he expected to be, and was questioned, but acted the 'Johnny Raw' so completely that he was let go as more fool than spy, one officer remarking as he left that the little devil might betray them. He came to Canfield in 1801, moved to Suffield Township in 1805 and to Springfield in 1807. On one trip for flour in 1802, with his horse taken ill thirteen miles south of Canfield, he climbed a tree, then came down and stood off the wolves all night with a club.
