How Shalersville Township, Portage County began

Shalersville Township, surveyed as Town 4, Range 8 of the Connecticut Western Reserve and covering about 28 square miles, takes its name from General Nathaniel Shaler, its original proprietor; it was first known as Middletown, after Shaler's hometown of Middletown, Connecticut. The Baker family of Tolland County, Connecticut, led by Joel Baker, became the township's first settlers in 1806, and township government organized in 1812. A post office served the community from 1824 to 1904. It is the only Shalersville Township in Ohio, and the county's own water history records the Ohio EPA's ongoing source-water assessment of the county's Shalersville well field, still found highly susceptible to contamination as of 2025. Today the township has 5,245 residents (2020).

Settled 1806 (Joel Baker family, of Tolland County, Connecticut), incorporated Township government organized 1812, by General Nathaniel Shaler (proprietor); Joel Baker (first settler).

Where the name comes from

Named for General Nathaniel Shaler, the township's original Connecticut proprietor; it was first called Middletown, for Shaler's own hometown of Middletown, Connecticut, before taking the proprietor's own name.

Before the town

No Native American village, camp or mound site specific to Shalersville Township is documented in the sources consulted, and the township is not among those the 1957 county history 'Portage Heritage' lists as holding recorded prehistoric sites. For the county's broader Native history.

Timeline

  1. — The family of Joel Baker, of Tolland County, Connecticut, becomes the township's first settlers.
  2. — Simeon Crane and his brothers Belden and Calvin build two log houses and move in for good in 1809; Lucinda Baker, born this year to the first settler, is the first child in the township.
  3. — Simeon Crane's son E. M. Crane, born June 14, is the first male child; Hezekiah Hine and Mary Atwater of Mantua are married, the township's first wedding, by Squire Elias Harmon.
  4. — Township government is organized.
  5. — Nathan Muzzy, a Yale graduate hired by Stephen Mason, finds a sawmill site on the Cuyahoga near the township's western line; a freshet destroys the new dam before the mill can run, and Mason later adds a grist-mill and becomes sheriff in 1814.
  6. — Silas Crocker, fifteen, comes with the Thompson families; he lives to eighty-five and serves as justice of the peace for many years.
  7. — George Barnes is elected justice of the peace by votes thrown away, as the voters supposed, on a man who lived in a corner of the township with no road to his place; he serves well, and three appeals from his decisions are all upheld.
  8. — A post office opens in the township.
  9. — General David McIntosh, a poor boy who worked for Judge Atwater and became a major-general of militia, dies on April 17 and leaves money to furnish flags to the county forever.
  10. — The township post office closes.
  11. — The township's population is 2,823, rising to 4,967 in 1970 and 5,976 in 2000.
  12. — The census counts 5,245 people; the Portage County Airport is in the southern part of the township.
  13. — The Ohio EPA updates its source water assessment for Portage County's Shalersville well field, again finding the aquifer highly susceptible to contamination.

Stories

A proprietor's hometown, twice over

General Nathaniel Shaler, the Connecticut proprietor who held title to this township, never lived on the land himself, but he left his mark on it twice. First the settlement was informally called Middletown, borrowing the name of Shaler's own hometown in Connecticut — a common pattern across the Western Reserve, where transplanted New Englanders often reached for a familiar name before settling on something more permanent. When the township organized formally in 1812, six years after the Baker family had arrived from Tolland County to become its first settlers, it took Shaler's own surname instead, becoming the only Shalersville in Ohio.

The constable who served himself

The first lawsuit in Shalersville, in the first two years after the township's organization on April 6, 1812, was Greenhood Burroughs against Richard Gay, the constable, to recover the value of a cow bell that had been lent and lost. Since the constable had to serve the summons, Gay is said to have taken himself aside and gravely read it to himself; the plaintiff did not recover. In 1815 the voters dissatisfied with the regular candidates for justice threw their votes, as they supposed, away on George Barnes, an erratic man living in the southwest corner of the township without a road to his place; when the ballots were counted Barnes was elected. Everybody was surprised, but Barnes pocketed the joke, qualified, and made a good justice. Meanwhile the township's founder, General Nathaniel Shaler of Middletown, Connecticut, a violent Federalist, is said to have refused to light his windows for his son-in-law Commodore McDonough's victory on Lake Champlain until the crowd threatened to tear his house down.
