How Greene County began
Greene County was organized by an act of the Ohio General Assembly passed March 24, 1803, carved from parts of Hamilton and Ross counties, with its first county court convened on May 10, 1803, at the house of Owen Davis on Beaver Creek, before Xenia existed; it takes its name from General Nathanael Greene of the Continental Army. Its seat, Xenia, was platted the same year at the forks of two Shawnee creeks and given a Greek name meaning "hospitality." The county's Little Miami River valley had been the site of Old Chillicothe (Chalahgawtha), one of the most important Shawnee towns in the Ohio country from 1774 until its abandonment after the Treaty of Greenville of 1795, a place tied to Daniel Boone's captivity and, by enduring popular tradition (now generally considered mistaken), to the birth of Tecumseh. Greene County went on to become a center of Black higher education, home to Wilberforce University (1856) and Central State University, and to the Antioch College experiment at Yellow Springs; it is nationally remembered for the F5 tornado that tore through Xenia and Wilberforce on April 3, 1974, one of the deadliest single tornadoes in United States history.
Xenia was chosen as county seat in 1803 after pioneer John Paul, who had purchased about 2,000 acres at the forks of two creeks that fed the Shawnee-associated Little Miami system, urged county commissioners to locate the seat there; surveyor Joseph C. Vance laid out the 257-acre town plot, which Paul sold for $250. The name Xenia, from the Greek word for "hospitality," was proposed by the Reverend Robert Armstrong and adopted at a town meeting after a tie vote was broken by Laticia Davis. Xenia was catastrophically struck by an F5 tornado on April 3, 1974, one of the defining events in the county's history.
