How Beavercreek began
Beavercreek is a modern suburban city carved out of Beavercreek Township, one of Greene County's four original 1803 townships; it has no historic downtown because it did not exist as a municipality until the 20th century. Farming crossroads and mill hamlets - Alpha, Trebein, New Germany, Zimmermanville, Knollwood - dotted the township for a century and a half. In February 1980 a part of the township incorporated as the City of Beavercreek, which includes the former unincorporated communities of Alpha, Knollwood, most of New Germany, and Zimmerman. It is now the largest city in Greene County.

Where the name comes from
The city takes its name from Beavercreek Township, itself named for Beaver Creek, the stream on whose bank Greene County's first court convened in 1803.
Before the town
No Native American village, mound, or treaty line is documented specifically within the area now inside Beavercreek's city limits. The nearest documented thread is the name of Indian Ripple Road (until the late 1950s 'Indian Riffle Road'), which historians tie to the Shawnee, who lived along the Little Miami River from the 15th to the 19th centuries with settlements running from Old Town north of Xenia down toward where the road runs today; 'riffle' or 'ripple' describes the shallow, rock-broken stretches of the river itself. The Shawnee were forced out of Ohio under the Indian Removal Act in 1832. For prehistoric mound-builder and broader historic-nation context for this part of the Little Miami valley.

Timeline
- — Owen Davis builds what the 1881 county history calls the first mill in Greene County on Big Beaver Creek at Alpha, later called the Alpha mill; it passes to Jacob Smith and James Scott.

Stories
A city with no downtown
Beavercreek has no old downtown. The Beavercreek area was settled in the early 1800s, and for the next century and a half it was Beavercreek Township farmland. In February 1980 a part of the township incorporated as the City of Beavercreek, which includes the former unincorporated communities of Alpha, Knollwood, most of New Germany and Zimmerman. By the 2020 census it had 46,549 residents, making it the largest city in Greene County.
Indian Riffle becomes Indian Ripple
One of Beavercreek's best-known streets carries a name that WYSO's reporters could not fully trace. Indian Ripple Road once ran alongside the Little Miami River, and WYSO concluded that it was named both for the river's riffles, the shallow rocky stretches, and for the Native Americans who lived along the river for centuries. The Shawnee were the predominant people along the Little Miami from the 15th to the 19th centuries, and in 1832 they were forced from their land in Ohio under the Indian Removal Act. The older name of the road was Indian Riffle Road. In the late 1950s the name was changed to Indian Ripple Road; WYSO found that accessible records do not state precisely when or why. The Greene Town Center was completed on the road in 2006.
The mill that gave Alpha its name
The oldest industry in the area was a mill. The 1881 county history says the flour mill of Jacob H. Harbine, southwest of Alpha on Big Beaver Creek, stood on or near the site of the first mill built in Greene County, put up by Owen Davis about 1797. It passed to Jacob Smith and then James Scott, and John Harbine rebuilt it in 1833; by 1881 it had four run of stone, four stories of frame and a capacity of seventy-five barrels a day, shipping flour to Baltimore. The book says the mill 'very appropriately took the name of Alpha,' being the first or on the site of the first mill in the county, and the village that grew up beside it kept the name. Alpha is one of the old crossroads communities that the city of Beavercreek absorbed when it incorporated in 1980.
