How Fairborn began

Fairborn was created on January 1, 1950, when the neighboring villages of Fairfield and Osborn merged, taking a name blended from both; the city was formally incorporated August 1, 1950. Fairfield dated to a log cabin built in 1799 and was platted in 1816; Osborn grew up in 1850-51 as a railroad town after Fairfield's farmers refused to let the tracks cross their land. Osborn's own town site was largely torn up and moved two miles east next to Fairfield in the early 1920s to get it out of the Mad River floodplain after the 1913 Dayton flood. The merged city sits against the west edge of Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, whose Wright Field origins go back to the Wright brothers' 1904-1905 test flights at Huffman Prairie, and the base's post-war growth sent Fairborn's population up sixfold between 1950 and 1970.

Where the name comes from

Fairborn is a portmanteau of Fairfield and Osborn, the two villages that merged to form it in 1950. Fairfield's own name has two competing stories: that a Native American observer said 'Yonder lies a fair field,' or that it was named after a town called Fairfield in England; neither is documented beyond local retelling. Osborn was named for E.F. Osborn, the railroad superintendent whose town accepted the tracks that Fairfield had turned away.

Before the town

Wikipedia's Fairborn article records that Shawnee people lived in the area and that early settlers and Shawnee had raids and prisoner exchanges, but states plainly that no massacres were recorded there. No named village, trail, or mound has been documented as sitting inside Fairborn's own corporate limits; the nearest recorded site, an Adena burial mound on Wright-Patterson Air Force Base land south of the Wright Brothers Memorial, falls in neighboring Bath Township rather than the city itself. Huffman Prairie Flying Field, which sits inside Fairborn per Wikipedia's own description, was Wright-family farmland by the time of the 1904-1905 test flights and no Native American site there is documented in the sources checked.

Timeline

  1. — The first log cabin is built at what becomes Fairfield, the older of Fairborn's two parent villages.
  2. — Fairfield is platted by European American settlers.
  3. — Osborn is laid out as a station on the new railroad after Fairfield's landowners refuse to let the line cross their farms; it is named for railroad superintendent E.F. Osborn.
  4. — Wilbur and Orville Wright make about 150 test flights at Huffman Prairie, on Torrence Huffman's farm near the Simms Station interurban stop, developing the Wright Flyer III, which they considered the first practical airplane.
  5. — The Great Dayton Flood on the Mad River leads the Miami Conservancy District to build the Huffman flood-control dam, which puts old Osborn's town site in the reservoir's floodway.
  6. — The U.S. Army Signal Corps acquires the Huffman Prairie flying field and names it Wilbur Wright Field.
  7. — Nearly all of Osborn, including the railroad, is physically relocated about two miles east to a site adjoining Fairfield; close to 200 houses are moved by mules and tractors, and many still stand in Fairborn's Osborn Historic District.

Stories

The town that moved for a dam

After the Great Dayton Flood of March 1913 killed hundreds of people downstream, the Miami Conservancy District built a ring of flood-control dams around Dayton, including one on the Mad River at Huffman. The dam's reservoir footprint took in the low ground where the railroad village of Osborn stood. Rather than abandon the town, its people spent the early 1920s taking it apart and rebuilding it two miles east, on higher ground next to Fairfield: nearly 200 houses, plus several wood-framed businesses, were hauled whole by teams of mules and by tractors. Many of those relocated houses are still standing today in what Fairborn now calls its Osborn Historic District, a rare case of an entire Ohio town being moved rather than drowned.

Two villages, two mayors, one marquee

For roughly thirty years after Osborn resettled beside Fairfield, the two kept separate governments, each with its own mayor, even though their built-up areas ran together with barely a line between them. When they finally merged on January 1, 1950, the new name Fairborn was stitched together from both. The Fairborn Theatre, a Streamline Moderne movie house built on South Broad Street in 1948, had already put the new name on its vertical marquee sign two years before the city legally existed.

A cow pasture, a banker, and the first practical airplane

In 1904, Dayton banker Torrence Huffman let Wilbur and Orville Wright use an 84-acre pasture he owned east of Dayton, on the condition that they move the cattle before flying. The field, known locally as Huffman Prairie, was flat, open, and close to an interurban trolley stop called Simms Station, which the brothers used to commute out from their Dayton bicycle shop. Over 1904 and 1905 they made about 150 flights there, working through repeated crashes to solve problems of control that the short hops at Kitty Hawk had not required them to face. By the end of the 1905 season they had the Wright Flyer III circling the field for over half an hour at a stretch, a machine they themselves called the first practical airplane. The Army took over the field in 1917 as Wilbur Wright Field, and in 1948 it merged with neighboring Patterson Field to form Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, which still borders Fairborn today.
