How Sugarcreek Township, Greene County began

Sugarcreek Township, in the southwest corner of Greene County, was organized on May 10, 1803 as one of the county's original four townships, but the county's first settlement had already been made near Clio, in the township's far south, in 1796. It takes its name from Sugar Creek, formed where Little and Big Sugar Creek join, and from the sugar maple groves that once covered the area. The township stayed agricultural through the 19th and 20th centuries, its main village Bellbrook platted in 1816; it remains largely rural farmland today, with the city of Bellbrook in its west and small parts of Centerville and Kettering reaching into its borders.

Settled 1796, incorporated 1803-05-10, by Greene County's associate judges, meeting May 10, 1803.

Where the name comes from

Named for Sugar Creek, formed by the joining of Little Sugar Creek and Big Sugar Creek; local histories attribute the name to the abundance of sugar maple trees along its banks. Ohio's only township of this name (five other Ohio townships are called 'Sugar Creek' as two words).

Before the town

No Native American village, mound, or treaty line specific to Sugarcreek Township turned up in the sources checked, including a keyword search of Dills' 1881 county history for 'Sugar Creek Township,' which returned only settler biographies. The GNIS historical place 'Manor,' listed under ZIP 45458 for this township, is the hamlet of Manor, a former railroad stop once called Rosedale, which sits in Washington Township, Montgomery County, not in Sugarcreek Township, Greene County - the two only share a ZIP code at the edge, so Manor is left out here. Dills' county history documents the Shawnee spreading from eastern Ohio to the headwaters of the Big and Little Miami rivers generally, which includes this watershed, but does not name a village or camp within the township. For prehistoric mound-builder cultures and the historic nations of the county as a whole, see the Greene County history.

Stories

A deed signed by a president

In 1813, Alexander Berryhill bought 640 acres of land south of Bellbrook, and the patent deed conveying it to him carried the signature of President James Madison, as land-office deeds of the era did. The family built a brick house on the property in 1832 that still stands at 3113 Ferry Road, known today as the Berryhill-Morris House. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1975 and remains one of the few genuinely rural, township-based landmarks in Sugarcreek Township, as distinct from the many Xenia-city listings that merely share a ZIP code with the township.

The blind horse that beat them all

Sleepy Tom was foaled in Bellbrook and lost his sight while being trained to race; declared useless, he was sold again and again, once for $30 and a bottle of whiskey. Steve Phillips took the blind horse on and trained him again, and in 1879 the pacer recorded the best time known in the world at any gait. The story was still being told in the township generations later as one of its signature 19th-century oddities, alongside the mineral-water resort that briefly made Bellbrook a destination.

The spring that drew a crowd, and the fire that ended it

By 1883, Bellbrook Park was built around a mineral spring locals called the Magnetic Spring, said to dispense up to 800 jugs of water a day to visitors who believed in its curative properties. A 75-room hotel went up to house them. In 1893, fire destroyed the hotel, and the resort era at Bellbrook Park ended almost as quickly as it had begun.
