How Mercer County began

Mercer County was created in 1820 from land previously attached to Darke and Shelby counties and formally organized January 2, 1824, named for Revolutionary War general Hugh Mercer, who never saw Ohio. Its recorded history opens with violence: St. Clair's Defeat on November 4, 1791, the worst loss the U.S. Army ever suffered at Native hands, happened on ground the army returned to in 1793 to build Fort Recovery, which beat back a major siege in 1794 and lent its name as a boundary point in the 1795 Treaty of Greenville. St. Marys served as the first county seat until Auglaize County took it away in 1848, by which time Celina -- founded 1834 -- had already taken over as seat. German Catholic immigrants filled the county's townships through the mid-1800s, building the churches now strung along the "Land of the Cross-Tipped Churches" byway, while Grand Lake St. Marys, hand-dug 1837-1845 as a canal feeder reservoir, briefly hosted the world's first offshore oil wells in the 1890s before becoming one of Ohio's first state parks in 1949. Carthagena, laid out by free Black settler Charles Moore in 1840, held a Black community for more than a century before becoming, and remaining, a Catholic seminary.

St. Marys, at the site of the old trading post called Girty's Town, was Mercer County's first seat when the county organized in 1824. When Auglaize County was carved out of Mercer's eastern and southern territory in 1848, St. Marys went with it, so Celina -- platted in 1834 and centrally located on the new county's reduced footprint -- had already been made the seat in 1839, in anticipation of the coming boundary change.
