Lakes near Celina

The history under the water: the valley before, the dam, the stories. All Ohio lakes

How Celina began

Celina was founded in 1834 by James Watson Riley on the northwest shore of what would become Grand Lake St. Marys, and its name is a respelling of Salina, New York. Made county seat in 1839 in place of St. Marys, the town grew slowly until the 1837-1845 digging of Grand Lake St. Marys as a Miami and Erie Canal feeder reservoir put it on the shore of what was briefly billed as the largest man-made lake in the world. An 1891 oil and gas strike turned the lake itself into an oil field, with derricks built on platforms out over the water; Celina is today Mercer County's seat and largest city, and the lake that made it a boomtown is now a state park and the center of a decades-long water-quality struggle.

Settled 1834, platted 1834, incorporated 1839 (named county seat), by James Watson Riley.

Where the name comes from

Named for Salina, New York, with the spelling altered to Celina.

Before the town

No Native village, trail or treaty site specifically inside the city of Celina was found in the sources consulted; before the 1837-1845 digging of Grand Lake St. Marys, this ground was part of the swampy prairie and forest of the upper St. Marys/Wabash drainage that Miami, Shawnee and other nations of the Ohio Country hunted and traveled through in the 1700s, the same country fought over at St. Clair's Defeat (1791) and the Battle of Fort Recovery (1794) a few miles to the west. Elsewhere in Mercer County, the record includes the Greenville Treaty Line and Anthony Shane, the Ottawa-French interpreter who platted nearby Rockford.

Nations recorded here: Miami, Shawnee.

Timeline

  1. — James Watson Riley founds Celina on the northwest shore of the future Grand Lake St. Marys.
  2. — German and Irish laborers hand-dig Grand Lake St. Marys as a Miami and Erie Canal feeder reservoir, using picks, shovels and mule-drawn sleds.
  3. — Celina is made the Mercer County seat, replacing St. Marys.
  4. — Oil and natural gas are discovered near Celina; derricks built out on the lake on pile platforms and log-and-stone cribs make it the site of the world's first offshore oil wells, with more than 100 eventually drilled.
  5. — Grand Lake St. Marys is dedicated as one of Ohio's first state parks.
  6. — Grand Lake St. Marys water is declared unsafe for swimming amid a worsening toxic blue-green algae (Planktothrix) crisis blamed on agricultural runoff and failing septic systems around the lake.
  7. — The Ohio Department of Health issues contamination advisories for Grand Lake St. Marys as microcystin toxin levels from the algae blooms peak.
  8. — An EF3 tornado strikes Celina, killing one person and injuring eight.

Stories

Oil derricks on a canal lake

Grand Lake St. Marys was dug between 1837 and 1845 for one purpose only: to feed water into the Miami and Erie Canal, and for decades the reservoir did exactly that and little else. Then, in 1891, drillers found oil and natural gas in the ground around Celina, and rather than stop at the shoreline they simply kept going, building derricks on pile platforms and log-and-stone "cribs" out over open water. More than 100 wells eventually pumped from the lake itself, making it, by local reckoning, the site of the world's first offshore oil drilling -- an odd distinction for a lake that exists purely because canal engineers needed somewhere to store water for boats forty miles away.

From boomtown lake to fouled watershed

The same lake that made Celina an oil boomtown in the 1890s became, more than a century later, the center of one of Ohio's worst inland water crises. Decades of agricultural runoff, manure, and failing home septic systems around the shallow, shore-hugged reservoir fed blooms of Planktothrix, a toxic blue-green algae producing the liver toxin microcystin; by 2010 the lake was declared unsafe for swimming, and in 2011 the Ohio Department of Health issued formal contamination advisories. Ohio EPA designated the lake "impaired," citing stream channelization, drainage tiles, and the loss of the streamside vegetation that once filtered nutrients before they reached the water -- an engineered lake undone, in part, by the same farmland drainage that had made the surrounding county prosperous. Water quality has since improved, with a marked drop in toxin levels reported by 2024.

Mostly estimated. Only 3% of these days come from a gauge standing inside Celina - the rest are worked out from the nearest gauges around it, so read them as close estimates rather than readings.

48,346 days of records, 1893-01-01 to 2026-10-29. Source: NOAA NCEI GHCN-Daily, 3,240 gauges in and around Ohio. A day is "gauged" when a gauge standing inside the boundary reported it, and the value is the mean of those gauges. Otherwise it is interpolated by inverse distance from every gauge reporting within 50 miles. Nothing is carried forward, back-filled or smoothed. Against NOAA nClimDiv county monthly precipitation over 136,848 complete county-months (checked 2026-10-31): correlation 0.9515, median absolute difference 0.217 in a month. Built 2026-10-31 from the Cracked Buckeye precipitation archive. Snow is the softer number — snowfall is measured by hand with a ruler, no agency publishes a gridded county snowfall series, and blowing snow defeats every observer.

Facilities are placed on the map from Ohio EPA's own map layers, EPA's Facility Registry, coordinates written in the filings, or a geocoded street address. A permit filed under a private person's name (most are household septic systems) is counted but never named, placed or linked; licenses for individual workers and open-burning notices are left out entirely.
