How Rockford began
Rockford calls itself the oldest village in Mercer County, tracing its start to 1815 and its formal platting to 1820, when Anthony Shane -- a French-Ottawa interpreter and government scout who had grown up among the Shawnee -- laid out the town of Shanesville on land granted him for wartime service along the St. Marys River. The name changed twice more, to Shane's Crossing and then, by Post Office Department decree, to Rockford, but the town's identity as a river crossing predates the United States' presence in the area: before Shane's arrival, the site served as a camping ground for Native travelers, and General Anthony Wayne built the short-lived Fort Adams nearby in 1794.
Settled 1815, platted 1820-06-23, by Anthony Shane (as Shanesville).
Where the name comes from
Founded as Shanesville for founder Anthony Shane, renamed Shane's Crossing, then renamed again to Rockford by decree of the Post Office Department.
Before the town
The St. Marys River site where Rockford stands served, according to the village's own recorded history, as a camping ground and village site for Native travelers before American settlement. Its founder, Anthony Shane (Antoine Chene), was himself the son of a French-Canadian father and an Ottawa mother, grew up among the Shawnee, married a Delaware (Lenape) woman, and worked as a U.S. government interpreter and scout after 1795; he received the land that became the town as a grant for that service in 1814. General Anthony Wayne's army built Fort Adams near the site in 1794 as a temporary supply post during the same campaign that produced Fort Recovery farther south.
Nations recorded here: Ottawa, Shawnee, Lenape (Delaware).

Timeline
- — Anthony Wayne's army builds Fort Adams near the future townsite as a temporary supply station.
- — Anthony Shane is granted 320 acres along the St. Marys River, plus 640 acres north of the eventual townsite, for his service as a U.S. government scout.
- — French-Indian trader Anthony Madore is credited with the area's earliest settlement.
- — Anthony Shane files his plat for Shanesville, 42 lots on the south side of the river.
- — During the War of 1812, General William Henry Harrison camps at the site with a large force en route to the northern campaign.
- — Shane sells his land and leaves for Kansas as a government agent accompanying Shawnee removal.
- — The town, then called Shane's Crossing, is renamed Rockford by the Post Office Department.
Stories
Three names for one river crossing
The place that is now Rockford has carried at least four identities in its recorded history. Before 1815 it was simply a Native camping and village ground on the St. Marys River, and in 1794 Anthony Wayne's army built the short-lived Fort Adams nearby as a supply post. Anthony Shane -- himself of French-Canadian and Ottawa descent, raised among the Shawnee, and by then a veteran U.S. government interpreter -- received the land in 1814 and platted the town of Shanesville there in 1820. As the community grew it became known as Shane's Crossing, honoring the same founder under a slightly different name, until 1890, when the federal Post Office Department, for reasons not recorded in the sources located here, decreed the town would be called Rockford instead. Through every name change, the underlying fact never shifted: this was, and remains, a crossing point on the St. Marys River, used by Native travelers, an army, a trader-turned-diplomat, and finally a settled American town.

48,467 days of records, 1893-01-01 to 2026-10-29. Source: NOAA NCEI GHCN-Daily, 3,240 gauges in and around Ohio. A day is "gauged" when a gauge standing inside the boundary reported it, and the value is the mean of those gauges. Otherwise it is interpolated by inverse distance from every gauge reporting within 50 miles. Nothing is carried forward, back-filled or smoothed. Against NOAA nClimDiv county monthly precipitation over 136,848 complete county-months (checked 2026-10-31): correlation 0.9515, median absolute difference 0.217 in a month. Built 2026-10-31 from the Cracked Buckeye precipitation archive. Snow is the softer number — snowfall is measured by hand with a ruler, no agency publishes a gridded county snowfall series, and blowing snow defeats every observer.
