How Logan County began
Logan County was established by the Ohio General Assembly on March 1, 1818, and named for General Benjamin Logan, the Kentucky militia officer who led the October 1786 raid that burned the Shawnee towns of the Mac-a-cheek (Mad River) valley within its future borders. Its seat, Bellefontaine, French for "beautiful spring," was platted in 1820 on ground near Blue Jacket's Town, a Shawnee village destroyed in that same raid, and is remembered nationally for the first concrete street pavement in America: a strip of Main Street in 1891, followed by Court Avenue in 1893. Before Logan's raid, this stretch of the upper Mad River watershed around present West Liberty and Zanesfield held one of the densest clusters of Shawnee towns in Ohio -- Wapatomica, Mackachack (Mac-a-cheek), Moluntha's Town, Blue Jacket's Town and others -- home over the years to Blue Jacket, Moluntha, Black Hoof and, in councils held decades later at Tecumseh's urging, to leaders drawn into his pan-Indian confederacy. Frontiersman Simon Kenton was marched through several of these towns as a captive in 1778 and forced to run the gauntlet at Mackachack, one of the best-documented Native captivity stories tied to any single Ohio county. Today the county's rolling, glaciated farmland north of the Mad River still carries Campbell Hill, Ohio's highest natural point, and a rural, small-manufacturing economy built up after the railroad reached Bellefontaine.
Bellefontaine, French for "beautiful spring," was platted in 1820 near several natural springs on ground that had been Blue Jacket's Town before Logan's 1786 raid, and was incorporated by the Ohio legislature in 1835; locally the name is pronounced "bell-FOUN-tin" rather than in the French manner. Its Second Empire courthouse (101 South Main Street), built in 1870 of locally quarried sandstone under a mansard roof, was listed on the National Register of Historic Places on June 4, 1973. Bellefontaine's best-known distinction dates to 1891, when local inventor George Bartholomew, using a Portland-cement process he had developed, paved an eight-foot strip of Main Street beside the courthouse with concrete -- the first concrete street pavement in the United States; two years later, in 1893, he paved a block of Court Avenue along the south side of the courthouse, and that original pavement has remained in place for more than a century. Campbell Hill, within the city limits, is at 1,549 feet the highest natural point in Ohio.
