How West Mansfield began

West Mansfield was laid out in 1848 by Levi Southard, a local landowner, who named the new village after his one-year-old son, Mansfield. An 1880s county history records that the place briefly went by the nickname 'Fip Town,' after surveyors visiting a local store, unable to get crackers and cheese, joked they would call the place that instead. The village incorporated in 1879, and the Toledo & Ohio Central Railroad reached it in 1893, followed by a tile-drainage manufacturing industry that became one of the largest of its kind in Ohio. West Mansfield is a farming-country village in northwestern Logan County with 749 residents in 2020.

Settled 1848, platted 1848, incorporated 1879, by Levi Southard.

Where the name comes from

Levi Southard, who laid out the village in 1848 on his own farm, named it in honor of his son Mansfield, who was one year old at the time. Local historians note the village was briefly nicknamed 'Fip Town' in its earliest days, after an incident in which surveyors could not buy crackers and cheese at the local store.

Before the town

No source records a Native American village, mound, trail, or treaty site specifically at West Mansfield. The village sits in northwestern Logan County, well west and south of the documented Shawnee towns of the Mad River valley (Blue Jacket's Town at Bellefontaine, Mackachack near West Liberty, and Wapatomica near Zanesfield). This area of the county lay within Shawnee homeland territory prior to removal in the early 1830s, but no named settlement or site tied to West Mansfield itself is recorded.

Stories

A father names the town for his baby son

In 1848 Levi Southard laid out the village of West Mansfield on his farm and named it for his one-year-old son, Mansfield. Bliss Danforth built the first house, a small round-log structure.

From 'Fip Town' to railroad town

The Logan County History Center reports a story that surveyors passing through stopped at the village's only store hoping to buy crackers and cheese; the storekeeper could not supply them, and the surveyors joked that they would call the place 'Fip Town.' The United Brethren built the village's first church in 1852, the Methodist Episcopal congregation organized in 1869 (the 1880 county history says 1860), and the village incorporated in 1879. The first Toledo & Ohio Central train arrived in July 1893 and regular passenger service began in September. Simpson Van Cleve moved to the village in 1881 and helped form the Van Cleve Clay Manufacturing Company, which made drainage tile and, after a fire in 1900, became one of Ohio's largest tile makers.

48,741 days of records, 1893-01-01 to 2026-10-30. Source: NOAA NCEI GHCN-Daily, 3,240 gauges in and around Ohio. A day is "gauged" when a gauge standing inside the boundary reported it, and the value is the mean of those gauges. Otherwise it is interpolated by inverse distance from every gauge reporting within 50 miles. Nothing is carried forward, back-filled or smoothed. Against NOAA nClimDiv county monthly precipitation over 136,848 complete county-months (checked 2026-11-01): correlation 0.9515, median absolute difference 0.217 in a month. Built 2026-11-01 from the Cracked Buckeye precipitation archive. Snow is the softer number — snowfall is measured by hand with a ruler, no agency publishes a gridded county snowfall series, and blowing snow defeats every observer.
