How Allen County began
Allen County was created by an act of the Ohio General Assembly that took effect April 1, 1820, from land the United States had only acquired from the Shawnee three years earlier, but it was left unorganized -- attached first to other counties for administration -- until it was fully organized on March 1, 1831; its first county commissioners met on June 6, 1831. It was named, like its sister Allen counties in Kentucky and Indiana, for Colonel John Allen, a Kentucky lawyer and legislator who raised the 1st Regiment of Kentucky Riflemen and was killed on January 22, 1813 at the Battle of Frenchtown (River Raisin) in the War of 1812; he never set foot in Ohio. Its seat, Lima, was platted March 3, 1831 in section 31 of Bath Township, five months before the Hog Creek Shawnee, whose reservation took in part of present-day Lima, ceded that reservation by the Treaty of Wapakoneta in August, and was named -- as county tradition holds -- for Lima, Peru, the source of the quinine bark used against the malaria that plagued settlers in the surrounding Great Black Swamp country. The county's land had been the Hog Creek band's home from the 1817 Treaty of the Maumee Rapids until the 1831-32 removal treaties sent the last resident Shawnee to Kansas, and Allen County's own great transformation came more than half a century later, when Benjamin Faurot struck oil on May 19, 1885 and turned Lima, almost overnight, into the center of the largest oilfield in the world and the home of Standard Oil's Solar Refinery and, a few years on, the Lima Locomotive Works and its famous geared Shay engines.
Lima was platted March 3, 1831 (plat filed April 20) in section 31 of Bath Township, five months before the Hog Creek Shawnee ceded their reservation, which took in part of present-day Lima, and was chosen as Allen County's seat when the county organized for government that June. County tradition holds the name came from Lima, Peru, the source of the cinchona bark from which quinine was made -- medicine badly needed against the malaria endemic to the surrounding Great Black Swamp lowlands. Lima incorporated as a village in 1841 and as a town in 1842, growing steadily as a farm-market and rail town until May 19, 1885, when local businessman Benjamin C. Faurot, drilling for natural gas at his paper mill, struck oil in the Trenton Limestone at about 1,252 feet. The resulting Lima-Indiana oil field became, within two years, the largest producing oilfield in the world; Standard Oil moved in by 1888, built its sulfur-removing Solar Refinery in Lima, and the boom-year population and construction that followed -- a city of roughly 8,000 that grew far larger over the next decade -- gave Lima the downtown commercial core, many now on the National Register, that still stands. A second industry followed close behind: Lima Locomotive Works, founded in 1877 as an agricultural-equipment maker (the Lima Machine Works), built its first Shay-type geared locomotive in 1880 under license from inventor Ephraim Shay and went on to build Shay locomotives for decades plus thousands of conventional engines -- including, in the 1920s-40s, the influential 'Super Power' Berkshire-type design -- before merging away in 1947 and leaving the locomotive business in 1956.
